Christmas cookie recipe
When I was a kid, making these Christmas cookies every year was a tradition in my house. We had lots of cookie cutters, and we’d cut sleighs, stockings, reindeer, stars and angels out of this dough. We’d decorate the cookies with sprinkles before we popped them in the oven.

My brothers and I always delivered plates of these cookies on Christmas Eve to the neighbors. Of course, we saved a few of them to leave by the fireplace with a glass of milk that night, too.

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • ½ c shortening
  • ½ c sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 c flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp vanilla
Time Estimates

Prep time: 15 min

Cook time: 10 min

Total time: 25 min

  1. Preheat oven to 375°
  2. Cream together cream cheese and shortening
  3. Add sugar and egg yolk to the cream cheese mixture and cream together until light and fluffy
  4. Sift flour, salt and nutmeg together and work into cream cheese mixture
  5. Add vanilla and mix
  6. Chill several hours in the refrigerator
  7. Roll out part of the dough on a floured surface (leave the rest in the refrigerator until you need it)
  8. Cut with cookie cutters
  9. Continue to roll out dough and cut shapes until all dough is used
  10. Sprinkle on decorations (optional)
  11. Bake on a greased cookie sheet for ten minutes or until light brown on edges

Makes 40-60 cookies

My notes

  • There are options for shortening available that don’t contain hydrogenated oils. Spectrum makes a shortening with organic palm oil. Earth Balance creates a vegan shortening out of a blend of oils.
  • You can make your own natural colored sprinkles by putting a couple of drops of natural food die in a bag, adding organic sugar and shaking until all the sugar is coated with color.
  • India Tree makes natural decorating sugar sprinkles.
  • It’s important to keep the dough chilled. If it gets too warm as you’re working with it, put it back in the refrigerator for a while.
