Brian and I spent this past weekend (without children!) in Annapolis, Maryland. If you’re ordering seafood, and when you’re in Annapolis you should, chances are it’s local seafood – especially if it’s crab, clams or oysters.
Of the three Annapolis restaurants we visited over the weekend, one really stood out. Hell Point Seafood
is a new restaurant on the Annapolis waterfront near the Naval Academy, new enough that our bed and breakfast hostess* hadn’t heard enough about it to give us a recommendation one way or the other. We thought we’d venture there anyway to check out the menu for lunch before we left on Sunday. Once we saw who owned the restaurant, there was no way we weren’t
Hell Point Seafood is owned and operated by Bob Kinkead, owner of Kinkead’s
in Washington D.C. On our fifth anniversary, a D.C. local pointed Brian and me to Kinkead’s and said we wouldn’t be disappointed. Late in the afternoon, I called for reservations for that evening and mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary.
When we arrived at the restaurant, we were taken to a private, secluded dining area. The menus on our table were custom printed with Happy 5th Anniversary at the top of them (we still have the menus somewhere). On the table were two Kinkead’s coffee mugs for us to take home filled with candy. I think there might have been balloons tied to the mugs, also. We were amazed at the kindness and the hospitality. The food was great, too.
So when we saw that Hell Point Seafood was associated with Kinkead’s, we knew we had found the right place for lunch. I was pleased to see that the menu not only had local seafood, but also other foods from the region. I had the cream of crab soup and a salad of local mixed greens with goat cheese. Brian had fish tacos, and while the Mahi in the tacos was probably not local, I checked with my Seafood Watch app
and found it is sustainable. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunches. I ordered the tarts with cherry compote with a side of pistachio ice cream for dessert. It was really good. So good that Brian, who hadn’t ordered dessert, ate half of it. We almost ordered a second, but restrained ourselves.
There were several menu items that had the word local associated with their ingredients. Hell Point’s website says the “menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients, while truly inspirational flavors and elegant preparation create an exciting dining experience.” I’d agree with that. It’s interesting to note that the lunch menu that is currently on the website features several different items than the one we were given the other day. It looks as if the menu is from earlier in the spring, and the menu indeed has changed with the season.
If you’re on the East Coast and within a few hours drive of Annapolis, I’d recommend it as a wonderful weekend getaway destination. And once you’re there, make your way to Hell Point Seafood by the waterfront.

* I have to give a little plug for the Georgian House Bed and Breakfast and our hosts Ann and Tom. Our cozy room was secluded, welcoming and relaxing, and Ann focuses on fresh, seasonal and local foods for her delicious breakfasts.
