Sales of Non-GMO Project Verified foods on the rise
In the past twelve weeks, foods that indicate on the label that they don’t contain genetically modified ingredients have risen twenty-one percent. Organic food sales are on the rise, too.

As I mentioned earlier today, food prices are on the rise. I pointed you to the Environmental Working Group’s new “Good Food on a Tight Budget Guide” that was compiled so that those who want to eat nutritiously can get the most nutritious bang for their buck.

More and more people are making it a point to be aware of what nutrients are in the foods they're eating. They’re also making it a point to avoid things they don’t want in their food – pesticides, artificial ingredients, and genetically modified ingredients (GMOs). And, while organic, truly natural, and Non-GMO foods tend to cost more, it seems people are willing to spend the extra money on them even while the cost of food is rising.

Food Navigator reports that since GMOs have been making headlines lately, especially since California will be voting on whether to label GMOs in November’s elections, the sales of food with the Non-GMO Project Verified label have risen 21 percent in natural supermarkets over the past twelve weeks. The sales of organic foods have risen 17 percent during the same time period.

USDA certified organic foods cannot contain GMOs, even though organic foods aren’t generally labeled as being free from GMOs.

Have you been more aware of the GMOs in your foods lately? Are you making different shopping choices because of your awareness, even if they raise the bottom line of your food bill?

No brainer. If one values their family thEir family wouldn't they prefer good food! I wonder when I see so many people shopping for 95 per cent processed food to feed their children. The excuse that they don't have time is not acceptable. Good organic is a whole lot cheaper than boxed crap and yet people say they can't afford it but spend hundreds on Mac and cheese in a box , boxed side dishes, frozen dishes, canned veggies (blah). If they would eat right, I bet they would save a lot of money
.... More
in a years time! Plus they would feel better. Go figure!

You shouldn't be so judgmental. There are a lot of people who would switch to all natural, organic if they could afford it. As for myself, we've been switching over slowly, but when you're on an extremely tight budget (single mom, ex lost his job and is not paying all of his child support, full time student who had to drop out of school because I have cancer) you can't always afford to be picky. I rarely feed my kids food out of a box, and they drink organic milk, and eat a lot of vegetarian food
.... More
because beans are cheap, but organic cooking oil costs 5 times what non-organic costs, and while I can get organic lettuce, potatoes, and apples for a reasonable price most of the time, most other organic produce is double the price or more.
