Seasonal recipes: 5 for Oktoberfest

During Oktoberfest, there's always plenty of beer. Why not try cooking with some of it?

In Germany, Oktoberfest is over by mid-October, but here in the United States, Oktoberfest celebrations run throughout the month. If you’re going to be celebrating Oktoberfest, why not use a little of the beer in your cooking to create a delicious feast?

We’ve got some great beer recipes here on MNN that come from the The Microbrew Lover’s Cookbook, a book that uses microbrews and craft beers as more than just thirst quenchers. Here are a few to whet your appetite:

• Mussels Steamed in Wheat Beer – A wheat beer is just un-hoppy enough to steam delectable mussels.

• Carbonnade of Beef Braised in Beer – Beef slow braised in a rich ale is a perfect October meal.

• Cod Baked in Cider – Cider is another one drink used to celebrate Oktoberfest. A good, dry hard cider is just what cod needs to turn out flavorful and flakey.

• Honey Cake with Stout – Stout flavors this spice cake that tastes even better on the second day.

The last recipe doesn’t come from the Microbrew Lover’s Cookbook. It’s a favorite recipe that I make many times over the cooler months.

Easy Slow Cooker French Dip – I make this recipe with a dark beer, usually Guinness, and I add 1/4 cup of soy sauce to the recipe.
