Since Saturday, my family and I have been snacking on Simply 7 Chips. I was sent a box full of their Hummus, Lentil, and Pomegranate chips is a variety of flavors to taste test. I must admit, I was skeptical about chips made from chickpeas, lentils and pomegranates, but I’m happy to find my skepticism was unwarranted. We have all been enjoying these chips that are different from crunchy snacks that are the norm.
Simply 7’s goal is to reverse the trend of chips with ingredients that are unrecognizable by creating a one-of-a-kind, healthy snacking experience based on unique, yet recognizable, ingredients including hummus, lentils and pomegranates. All of the varieties are kosher, non-GMO, vegetarian and have up to 50-percent less fat than potato chips.
The Pomegranate Chips come in Sea Salt, Black Pepper and White Cheddar flavors. My 11-year-old took a bag of the White Cheddar Chips to the pool with him yesterday and he and his friends ate them up despite their pink hue.
The Hummus Chips come in Sea Salt, Spicy Chili Pepper, Tomato Basil, and Roasted Red Pepper flavors – all traditional hummus flavors. These chips are made with chickpea flour as their first ingredient. My 13-year-old and I have been happily munching on the Spicy Chili Pepper variety, and we are eyeing the Red Pepper to open next.
I enjoyed the Sea Salt Lentil Chips. The boys weren’t so crazy about the word lentil so they haven’t tried them yet. I’m sure if they end up being the last bags to be opened, they’ll dive in and find they enjoy them. The Lentil comes in Sea Salt, Bruschetta (also on my to-be-opened-soon list), Creamy Dill, and Jalapeno.
Processed chips, whether they’re made healthier or not, should still be a once-in-a-while treat. They shouldn’t be included on the side of every lunch or mindlessly eaten in front of the TV each night.
However, I find that in the summer I do go through more chip-type snacks because of the pool. Our pool has a thriving snack bar that offers some wonderful options – salads, wraps full of fresh vegetables, pizza topped with vegetables, unsweetened iced tea flavored with basil, orange, lemon, mint and other fresh produce, and more. But, it also offers lots of candy, chips, and sugary frozen treats. My boys have their own money, and they will frequently take it to the pool and buy snacks I’m not so crazy about.
So, I try to pack snacks for them so they aren’t tempted to buy the less-healthy options at the snack bar. Something like these Simply 7 Chips that have ingredients that are better than the Doritos or Cheetos they’d be buying are very welcome on the days they’ll be at the pool while I’m home working.
