The omnivore's 100: a foodie list
Tue, Dec 02 2008 at 11:00 AM
 3
In a previous post, I wrote about the Vegetarian 100 - a list that shows up on many foodie blogs with 100 foods that all vegetarians should try. It’s a great list, and you don’t have to be a vegetarian to get inspiration from it.

Today, I’m tackling the Omnivore’s 100, a list created by Andrew Wheeler over at Very Good Taste. I’ve bolded the items on the list that I’ve tried, and sadly, my score is 33%. That’s worse than my Vegetarian 100 score of 37%, and I’m not a vegetarian.

To improve my score, I’m going to give #47 - chicken tikka masala – a try in the next week or so and report back to you on it. I don’t ever plan on having a perfect score on this particular list. I think my foodie life can go on just fine without ever trying roadkill (#75) or whole insects (#42). But, if you’ve ever tried either of these, um, delicacies, please tell us about it in the comments.

You gotta try fried plaintain, Robin. Just make sure it's fried, not raw. And you've never had pistachio ice cream? Weird. I haven't either, but I'm picky and don't like pistachios.

And are they implying that beignets, churros, elephant ears and funnel cakes are interchangable? Because they most certainly are not. No one who's had a genuine New Orleans beignet could compare it to a state fair funnel cake. Different beast entirely.

You're absolutely right - beignets and funnel cakes are different, but I love them both. I've had beignets from Cafe Du Monde in N.O. and funnel cake from the NJ boardwalk - the best place to get both. And while both are quite a treat, they certainly are different. If you're going to lump them all together, then you should add Italian zeppolis which are fried dough treats with powdered sugar, too, but they are they're own yummy treat. Pistachio ice cream doesn't excite me, but I'd give it a try.
