Every time new statistics about food waste are released, the amount of food that’s wasted globally seems to go up. When I first started learning and writing about food waste five years ago, the estimates on wasted food were around 30 percent.

A new report by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Britain now says that number may actually be as 50 percent. Voice of America produced this video about the problem:

I like that the news report ended on a positive note. There is enough food to feed everyone if we work to reduce food waste.

The first step for most of us in reducing food waste is to lessen the waste in our own kitchens. Check out these 10 ways to curb your food waste.

I really need to reduce food waste in our own household first. I am guilty of buying foods and forgetting about them or not using them in time before they go bad. I've seen a "food waste Friday" where you take a picture of wasted food each week and considered participating.
