Weekend reads: Thanksgiving don'ts

Food news and items of interest from around the Web for your weekend reading.

Fri, Nov 18 2011 at 6:25 PM EST

I’m sure most of us will be doing Thanksgiving prep this weekend: shopping, making some of the food ahead of time, and cleaning the house. There’s a lot to do, but there are also some things you shouldn’t do, especially when it comes to cooking.

  • I found an interesting list of don’ts on, of all places, a plumber’s site. It seems the day after Thanksgiving isn’t just the busiest day of the year for retail stores; it’s also the busiest day of the year for plumbers who are called to come out and fix clogged garbage disposals. LGE Plumbing has a good list of things you should not put down your garbage disposal on Thanksgiving.
  • Eatocracy has five things you shouldn’t do it or you’ll dry out your turkey. One of them is to not stuff the bird because you have to cook it too long to make sure the stuffing is safe. Their solution for getting turkey drippings into your stuffing even it’s not in the bird is really clever.
  • If you’re like my older brother, you’ve embraced the deep-fried Thanksgiving turkey. Affordable cool has a video that shows How Not To Deep Fry a Turkey plus some tips on what you should do. (I would say just don’t deep fry it at all, but that’s me.)
  • Esquire lists the three biggest Thanksgiving don’ts. Having been served filet mignon one year instead of turkey, I totally agree with their #2 biggest Thanksgiving don’t.

Enjoy your weekend!
