Weekend reads: Valentine's tidbits

Food news and items of interest from around the Web for your weekend reading.

Thu, Feb 09 2012 at 5:03 PM EST

Happy Valentine’s weekend. While the actual holiday isn’t until next Tuesday, many people will be celebrating it this weekend by dining out, hitting the wine trails, shopping for the perfect gifts for their loved ones, or perhaps attending anti-Valentine’s parties and events.

What, you don’t know about anti-Valentine’s day? It’s an actual thing. We even had an anti-Valentine’s day gift guide here on MNN last year.

But, for those of you planning on celebrating Valentine’s, you might want a little something to read as you plan.

  • Time covers Valentine’s Day 2012, Spending by the Numbers. There’s lots of statistics there like the fact that the average person spends $126.03 by the time the holiday is over.
  • Valentine’s Day? Like everything else, there’s an app for that. 10 of them, apparently.  MacLife reviews 10 Apps for an Extra Special Valentine’s Day.
  • Let Jamie Oliver plan your Valentine’s dinner. You’ll still have to cook it yourself, but Epicurious has Oliver’s “Italian-inspired Valentine's Day menu is all heart and no hassle.”
  • MNN has a short list of perfect Valentine’s songs to add to your Valentine’s playlist if you make one. Personally, on Valentine’s Day, we type Frank Sinatra into Pandora and let it create a play list for us. But, if I were making my own, I’d add #’s 1 and 3 from MNN’s list to it.

Enjoy your Valentine’s weekend whether you’re celebrating or not!
