At the Natural Products Expo East last week, I was introduced to two brands of muesli. The first product I tried was from Seven Sundays. I tried the Vanilla Cherry Pecan Muesli in yogurt and it was very good. The Vanilla Cherry Pecan contained dried bing cherries, coconut, honey, pecans, pure vanilla powder and whole grain oats, and I thought that it was a great way to add some extra nutrition to yogurt.
I also tried the Classic Swiss Muesli from Muesli Fusion. This organic muesli contains all organic ingredients including whole grain rolled oats, raisins, chopped almonds, cranberries, golden flaxseed, dates, and whole grain rolled rye.
The ingredients in both of those brands sound like what you would find in granola, don’t they? Muesli and granola are actually made of similar ingredients but the difference is that muesli is raw and granola is usually toasted. Because granola is often toasted in some kind of oil and has sugar or honey added to it, it’s usually higher in fat and sugar than muesli. Both can be good sources of whole grains, fibers, fatty acids, protein, and vitamins and minerals.
How can you add muesli to your diet? I’ve been simply adding it as is to yogurt over the past week, but there are other ways to enjoy muesli.
- Eat it like cold cereal with milk poured over it. Some people like to let it soak overnight in the milk.
- Add fresh berries to the muesli.
- Eat it hot like oatmeal by using ½ cup of boiling water for each ½ cup of muesli.
- Use it to make baked goods like Seven Sunday’s Farmer’s Market Muesli Cookies or Muesli Fusion’s Apple Cinnamon Protein Muffins.

- Nuts and seeds provide protein, omega-3 oils along with several antioxidants and vitamins.
