Wow!! These environmentalist are getting really good at misinforming everyone! If they would do more research they would see that most corn is rotated with another crop such as soybeans, canola, or corn. Go on try to get farmers to quit growing corn. One day maybe the environmentalist will be the one starving to death because they don't have corn to eat, feed their livestock with, oil to cook with, or fuel for their vehichle. Corn is already in short supply and is very evident from the price

I didn't know that there was so much corn grown around the gulf of mexico that it poluted the whole gulf.

Look at a map sometime. The Missouri river empties into the Mississippi river which empties into the gulf, along with all of the run off from the midwestern farms. Corn does not have to be grown in Corpus Christie to polite the gulf. Look up the words watershed and runoff to learn how the process works before exposing your ignorance all over the internet.

Why do people farm? To make ends meet, just like everyone. Market prices determine what is most profitable to grow. Farmers take care of the land because it is what takes care of them.

Small farmers who own the land do take care of the land. Big corporations who own massive acreages do not take care of the land. They cut down trees, plow up pastured land, and use herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation irresponsibly.

Corn is actually a rotational planting. My son in law alternates corn with soy beans, winter wheat and rye. To many persons writing these articles actually are political activists rather than serious students of agriculture. Fortunately few persons actually follow the advice of the current media.

You people all must be dumbed down americans, assuming from your responses. I think the bigger picture the article is trying to portray is that ALMOST ALL FOODS WE EAT, are in some way contaminated, harmful (not only to the earth, but to US), and NOT that we stop eating those foods, but find a healthier alternative. Must these authors do ALL the work for us? No, they are already giving us a huge heads up, since most of us go on living life, without a care in the world. Do your own part, and help

Ethanol is a joke. It only exists to give the goverment an excuse to subsidize farmers for growing corn that is not fit for human consumption. It takes 150 gallons of gasoline to produce 200 gallons of ethynol and that's not evem cointing the amount of fuel needed to truck it into gas ststions because it can't be transported through pipelines.

Ok, so pretty much all the food people eat nowadays. You should provide better alternatives for the foods listed even though they're so vague. For example: "some seafood". Wow way to go.

Ethanol? What a joke. Did you ever look at EPA ratings for all those flex fuel vehicles running on E85? The vehicle looses 10% or more in efficiency and the consumer pays the same cost for the blended fuel. Emissions don't decrease and ethanol corn competes with food corn. Hmm doesn't make any real sense. On top of all that, the federal government has to subsidize ethanol production and require it to be placed into our fuel to keep it around. Just keeps getting worse. this artcle seems to have been written by an amature as maybe a 7th grade science paper. these problems are problems that can all be fixed with a little common sense. for example any decent farmer for the last 3,000 years has known that rotating ALL crops is a must

Yes, every farmer knows that rotating crops is good for many reasons. However, there are many cases where crops are grown in monoculture until the disease pressure is too high and it is no longer profitable to produce on that land. Then the land is rotated to another crop.
High-fructose corn syrup foods
High-fructose corn syrup is one of the most environmentally damaging ingredients for a variety of reasons. Firstly, corn is grown as a monoculture, meaning the land is used solely for corn and not rotated, which depletes soil nutrients, contributes to erosion and requires more pesticides and fertilizer. The use of such chemicals contributes to problems like the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, an area of the ocean where nothing can live because the water is starved of oxygen, and atrazine, a common herbicide used on corn crops, has been shown to turn male frogs into hermaphrodites. Milling and chemically altering corn to produce high-fructose corn syrup is also an energy-intensive practice.
