In addition to carnivorous cocktail-swillers and those with a penchant for purchasing meat-based novelty items, bacon has been embraced by the baked goods industry. While bacon cupcakes and cinnamon rolls have proved popular, if there’s a singular pastry that’s come to symbolize Bacon Nation, it’s the Bacon Maple Bar served at Portland, Ore.'s temple of offbeat fried dough items, Voodoo Doughnut.
The Bacon Maple Bar at Voodoo Doughnut is basically a standard maple bar (a rectangular raised yeast pastry with maple frosting) plus two strips of crispy bacon on top. If sugary cereal, not bacon, is your breakfast vice of choice, Voodoo Doughnut offers Captain My Captain and The Loop, vanilla frosted doughnuts topped with Cap'n Crunch and Froot Loops, respectively. Although Voodoo Doughnut takes pride in incorporating all of the wicked breakfast items that your mother wouldn’t let you eat as a kid into its baked goods, the menu does contain several vegan-friendly options. This is Portland, after all. And sorry, Bacon Maple Bar, we know you're world-famous but we’re eyeing that Apple Fritter.
