10 cooking staples that can outlast you: Vinegar
Laura Moss/MNN

of course vinegar will last and is a very usefull household item to have always.

The most nutritious rice kept forever5ta and corn syrup rotted overnight. Sigh.

I agree fully with the list, and a couple of the commentators. THE key is proper storage: airtight containers, dry, cool place. My experience has been that all of these will last forever. I have never lost any of these staples when I have had them in airtight containers in especially a place will little or no moisture in the air. I would also add a couple more items. Dried beans and legumes store as well as rice provided they are stored as well.

None of these things will hurt you as none of them support bacteria no matter how long you leave them. Now, what gets into them is a different story, but if you look into a box of cornstarch and see green stuff growing then "common sense" would dictate that that is probably no longer "pure" cornstarch and in that case it's your own fault if you get sick. And you might win a lawsuit in our insane legal system, but you really shouldn't be contributing to the gene pool.
