10 cooking staples that can outlast you: Rice
Vanessa Pike-Russell/Flickr

"wild" rice is not a rice at all. It is a grass that does not belong in this category and does not behave chemically/nutritionally the same as other rices. The writer is misleading....

While they may not be the healthiest part of a Western diet, do remember that people have (and some still do) sustained their families for generations and generations on mostly rice.

There's no need to throw them out, and there's also no need to EAT THEM. They have NO NUTRIENTS! This is the same insulin spike as eating sugar. Why is MNN supporting WHITE RICE?? I'm not getting this whole list.

Hi TS, good to see you here. This list of 10 "forever foods" aren't necessarily foods we recommend....but foods - for many different reasons - that literally never spoil. Like you, we endorse whole foods, whole grains, and planet-friendly foods. But its truly amazing to discover that items like vanilla extract could last 100 years. Who knew? :)
