Deeds, not words, are the key to Aflac's success, as the company demonstrates in its 2012 Corporate Citizenship Report. The insurer is celebrating a number of honors for its philanthropy, workforce diversity and sustainability, including being named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America for the second time.

In this video, you'll learn the ways in which Aflac has given back to the community and improved itself over the past year. Highlights include a 20-year commitment to help treat and cure childhood cancer, the creation of one of America's best working environments, and greener operations at the company's headquarters.

In 2012, Aflac surpassed the $79 million mark in total contributions aimed at making a difference in the lives of families with children facing cancer. Most of the donations went to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta, Ga. The company also raised over $2 million for pediatric cancer treatment through its popular Holiday Duck program, a partnership with Macy's.

Aflac boasts a workforce of nearly 70 percent women and more than 40 percent minorities — landing on Black Enterprise's list of 40 Best Companies for Diversity for the eighth straight year, and on Fortune Magazine's Best Companies to Work For for the 15th year in a row. Among the benefits Aflac employees enjoy are miles of scenic walking trails, generous bonuses, and flextime to help balance work and family.

Protecting the habitat is another crucial goal for Aflac. The company cut electricity usage in major buildings by 35 percent and is well on its way to reducing as much solid waste as it produces, with the help of a machine that converts food waste from the cafeteria to nutrient-rich greywater.

Aflac also supports projects that improve the quality of life for the community. In addition to donating $1 million to the Chattahoochee River Restoration Project in Columbus, Ga., Aflac takes a hands-on role in keeping local rivers clean through various volunteer programs and events.
