It’s Friday afternoon, and that means it’s time for me to give you a little weekend reading from around the web. Here are a few food related items that I thought might interest you.
 
Wired brings us a story about Le Whif, a cocoa pipe that lets you inhale chocolate. My question would be is the chocolate fair trade and can the pipes be recycled.
 
Chocolate can be addictive, and eating it is fattening -- which is why a Harvard professor has helped create a cigarette-like chocolate inhaler that allows users to take a puff of their favorite treat whenever they want.

A few months ago, I reported that pavement for The People’s Garden had been broken. Obama Foodamra reports that planting is now in full swing.
 
Ob Fo went over to the Jamie Whitten Building of the USDA this morning to see exactly what was going on with Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack's People's Garden, and...it was a thrilling surprise. Master Gardener Valerie Frances and NRCS landscape architect Bob Snieckus were hard at work with a big crew, prepping what's turned into a a truly fantastic project.

Tomato Casual has an interesting way to grow tomatoes if you don’t have a garden – straight in the potting soil bag.
 
Perhaps you don’t have access to a tiller to prepare your vegetable bed, or time to till.
 
Maybe you live in a place without much land to begin with.
 
One way you can still grow tomatoes is simply by planting them straight into the soil bag.

Change.org finds it appalling that in San Joaquin County, CA, 41% of the adults are classified as food insecure, yet the county is ranked as one of the top 5 agricultural producers in the state.
 
There is a logistical aspect of hunger in the United States that really drives me nutty. It would be one thing if we struggled, as a nation, to produce enough food to feed ourselves. Fine. I could deal with the notion that hunger in this country is a direct result of a lack of food available for consumption.
