Wine review: Santa Julia Organica Malbec

An organic wine saves a snowed-in day.

Last weekend, I went on a much needed girls’ getaway with my friend Susan. We went to Loudon County, Virginia – D.C.’s Wine Country. We had planned on spending Saturday following one of the many wine trails in the county. Instead, we ended up snowbound in our hotel room. The snow began Saturday morning and lasted all day. Not the day we had planned, but we were determined to make the best of it so we ran to the local Wegmans for some provisions before the roads got too bad.

We bought a $9.99 bottle of 2009 Santa Julia Organica Malbec that caught our eye. We weren’t disappointed with our choice. The wine was fruity, but not too sweet, and had a nice spice to it. It went great with the hard cheeses and salty cashews that we had picked up. It was also very nice with the prepared pasta bowls that we had bought to heat up in the hotel room microwave.

Santa Julia Organica Malbec is made with 100 percent organically grown grapes. This Argentinean wine is made by the family owned Familia Zuccardi winery in Mendoza. Not all of their wines seem to be made from organic grapes, but on the back of the bottle of wine there is a list of features for their Organica line.

  • 100% organically grown grapes
  • Social welfare programs
  • Energy conservation
  • Use of green fertilizers
  • Wildlife preservation
  • Irrigation from pure mountain water and water recycling programs
This was a really great bottle of wine at a great price. I’ll definitely be grabbing a few bottles if I see it at a local merchant.

After our snowed in day, Susan and I did get to visit a couple of the local wineries in Loudon County on Sunday. I’ll have more on that for you in a couple of days.
