On Aug. 7, Jeremiah Chamberlain leads a mule train carrying U.S. mail down a trail towards the village of Supai on the Havasupai Indian reservation near Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona.
Because there are no roads or rail service into Supai, a village of 600 people on the floor of the Grand Canyon, the mail is delivered on the backs of mules five days a week — rain or shine — down the steep terrain. Due to budget shortfalls, the U.S. Postal Service is threatening to close the post office in Supai.
