Chopsticks Day

In a prayer for health, a woman throws a bundle of used chopsticks into the fire on Aug. 4 in the Hie Shrine in Tokyo.

Around 100 people came to the Hie Shrine on Aug. 4 to burn 7,000 pairs of used chopsticks in celebration of Chopsticks Day. Initiated in 1980, the festival is now celebrated annually to show gratitude to chopsticks for the utensils' role in the life of Japanese people.
