The Echo Caves in the Dolomite Mountains of South Africa are some of the oldest caves in the world and were declared a historical monument when discovered in 1923.

 

The caves are named “Echo” because centuries ago, the local people used the stalactites as drums to warn of approaching Swazi tribes. As the caves extend for some 25 miles, the sound traveled for surprisingly long distances and the people could take refuge in the caves.
