Plains of toxic sludge

Cracks run along the surface of red toxic sludge in the reservoir near Ajka, Hungary, on Oct. 12.

A reservoir containing red toxic sludge from an aluminum plant in Ajka broke eight days earlier, and more than 1 million cubic meters of the poisonous chemical sludge inundated three villages, killing eight people and injuring more than 100.
