Just how good is the iPhone 5's battery?
Battery life woes on the iPhone 5 may not be the fault of the device itself. Apple's iOS6 may actually be the battery drain culprit.

The battery charging symbol of an iPhone

Some new iPhone 5 owners must feel like they are in the movie "Gaslight," in which a man tries to drive his wife crazy by making her think that much of what she sees and remembers isn't true.

Early reviews of the newest iPhone praised its exceptional battery life, using phrases like "great battery life" (Wall Street Journal) and "Better battery life? Actually, yes." (Engadget).

But a Google search for "iPhone 5 battery life" turns up scads of complaints by owners, including on Apple's own user forums, featuring such words as "battery drains unusually fast," "the battery barely lasts" and "definitely seeing major drainage."

According to Apple, the battery in the iPhone 5 should provide up to 8 hours of Web-surfing and other Internet use, even on the notoriously power-hungry LTE wireless service that is a key selling point of the new device. Apple also claims an amazing 8 hours of talk time — though that's only if you shift down to 3G wireless service. [IPhone 5 Fans Want More Features, Still Line Up]

Some users are claiming far, far less. One reported losing 10 percent of the charge every 15 minutes doing nothing but texting and without Wi-Fi turned on. Another wrote that the battery charge dropped 40 percent overnight, with no apps running and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless turned off.

Yet for every complaint about battery life, there are about as many users praising the performance, saying they are getting about the same or better endurance with the iPhone 5 than with previous models, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Our sister site, LAPTOP, reviewed the iPhone 5 and did see an endurance boost. The iPhone 4S running iOS 6 lasted 5 hours and 54 minutes when surfing the Web continuously over 3G on 40 percent brightness. The iPhone 5 lasted 7:13 on the same test, so over an hour longer.  [The iPhone 5 — How Did We Get Here?]

If there is a problem, it may lie not in the iPhone 5 but in the latest operating system, iOS 6. Some people are having similar problems with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S after upgrading to iOS 6. One person said the battery had dropped 40 percent after an hour and a half of the phone "doing nothing." Another noted losing 56 percent in 2 hours and 20 minutes of "simply reading" on the device. Both said that these results were far worse than what they had gotten from the same smartphone before the software upgrade. For some people, talk time has also suffered.

Apple has had battery-draining issues in the past with new operating systems and has fixed them with software patches. The iOS 6 introduces many new features — including a much-maligned map application — that may consume power differently or use wireless services in different ways. iPhone owners, or Apple itself, may have to make adjustments to how this software runs in order to reduce the drain on the battery.

At the moment, it's too early to tell if the fast battery drain is a widespread problem or a fluke, and whether — if there is a problem — it will be easy to fix.

When I first got my iphone 5 battery life was fine and then suddenly it was terrible. Then I noticed that it was charging in a very short time. So I did a charge with battery doctor. I have never been very sure of this app but it seems to have worked. It took several hours to get to a full charge and 24 hours later I still have 94%. I don't know if you could achieve the same effect simply by leaving the phone on charge after it says its 100%. Anyway I'm delighted and, if I'm right, this is a software

why don't they just make it thicker and triple the battery. seems dumb to make it smaller and barely upgrade components. I'd rather spend 1k to get an iphone thats twice as fat with better hardware and battery

Is it because you are using your phone differently--more data or pictures? Did you upgrade to io6 before switching phones? I am a wee bit nervous about the battery time myself so I love to hear some first person accounts.

Charge my phone overnight and normal use during the day. Early news reading and some searching. It is 3:45PM and my battery is at 5%. On my previous iPhone 4 with iOS 6 I would get a full day use.

Uh oh. That's not encouraging at all. (especially since with the new cord, there aren't adaptors everywhere for it to recharge.)

This is my first crack at an iPhone; coming from having a Blackberry and then a Droid X. I have thought that the batter, thus far, has been working well. The other morning, while away from all my other media outlets, I fired up wifi and watched an hour long episode of Sons of Anarchy streaming over netflix. One hour of constant video stream took my battery down 9%. I do not think this is unreasonable. Yesterday, I had the phone off of the charger for just shy of 14 hours. I was at 8% when I
.... More
plugged it in to charge. I never disabled LTE all day, and I ran wifi for I'd say 40% of the day. I must have lucked out with a stable load of the OS, as I feel this is more than suitable, because since I just got the device I can NOT put it down and I'm on it at all times. Today, since I forgot my cord and now have no charger at work, I have been doing some tweaks to see what I can get out of the battery. I am currently at 8 hours 28 minutes since a charge and sitting at 54% battery. I have disabled all data, while at work, because I can connect to wifi. I only had to connect the data while I was out on my hour run. I stream iHeart radio on the 22 minute commute to work, and just finished a lunch break run that had my phone tracking the status on MapMyRun while streaming radio from iHeart for the whole hour. I also just got off a 17 minute phone call, and I've been using the phone for email and reddit sporadically through the day. (I unplugged it from the charger at 6:50am and it is now 3:11pm). If you're expecting more than that, I'm not sure where to send you...Go get a Droid Razr Maxx.
