Helix Nebula

The Helix Nebula, sometimes referred to as the ‘Eye of God’, was formed when a sun-like star was dying and a gush of gases escaped. At the center of the nebula, there remains a super-hot white dwarf star. The colors in the image come from the types of gas that are present and the tentacles on the inner rim of the nebula are formed by a hot ‘cosmic wind’. Because it is so close, it can be viewed through binoculars as a green cloud in the constellation Aquarius.
