Scientist creates lifelike cells out of metal
Researcher says he has created living cells made of metal instead of carbon — and they may be evolving.

I sense this is poof that life can exist from the harshest of elements somewhere in the universe.. fun to think about
Evolution does not try to explain the origins of life.
Neither does an invisible superhero in the sky. (:
Such a belief would definitely explain the origin of life as we know it; but it is just that in the end, a belief. And, to be frank, what even the scientific community has is also a belief on the case about abiogenesis; sure, it seems like the most likely and the most reasonable way of such life to come about, but without evidence, it is still a belief......then again, I suppose this article can be seen as some kind of evidence.....eh..idk.
In addition to that, the "invisible superhero.... More
Does anyone else realize the medical and technological possibilities in this discovery. Imagine a machine, like your car or a highly sophisticated piece of machinery that could repair itself over time. Imagine a robot that could be programmed to replace the cells in the body lost due to deterioration or injury. Imagine the ability for a tool to reshape itself to your needs (a hammer becoming a screwdriver and later a perfectly sized wrench). These are just a few basic examples of the things.... More
That is only the start. Just think a self sustaining space station. Or a probe we could send to mars and have it learn tons of things then find its way back to share it all with us. Furthermore it proves that the formation of life is inevitable it will happen with whatever elements are available.
Geodude does exist!
Big deal...he used mercury.
Nothing newsworthy there...move along...
ahhhh.... the close minded.... hey that iron and steel will never float or fly.
The evolving or adapting of creatures over time is a process that we can see tanable results from today. But all the animals that God created have never evolved into any "new" animal or person, there is no proof, nor do we see it happening in any way today.
No proof other than overwhelming genetic, fossil, and morphological evidence that all species on Earth are evolved from earlier species, and descend from common ancestors.
parting from the fact that metals like that are way to rare in enviroment for the cell to be making membrane polymers out of them; is it viable that live form in earth?
in my thoughts I look for a viable solution an the only more element I found viable for tht in earth is silicon (Si) because of its carbon similar bonding an hybritation orbitals stability characteristic, the only problem I see with that os the rigid and crystaline structural molecular characteristic of silicon based.... If you look closely, you can see the person taking the picture.
I´ll be back!
Another rung in the latter of the coming robot takeover...
And thus the Silver Surfer was born

Evolution is fact whether you like or not.......You cant just say well evolution isnt real because i say so....come up with examples
That is true; evolution i.e. the periodic change in the organisms present in an environment, is real because it is an observation. Whereas it's explanation, which is by natural selection, is the one which can be refuted or explained by any other theory, if it is a robust enough theory. That is because there could be other forces at work; by that I mean G......the opposite sex for the sexual selection theory! :P
But yeah, there could have been an intervention by a group of aliens who.... More
Why not?
Except there is no such thing as evolution..
Evolution is fact. Evolution is change over time. Things change. Instead, try attacking abiogenesis!
So why have no other animals "changed". All other primates have remained nonhominoid for 60million years! I'm not saying that evoluton doesn't play a part.
Survival of the fittest and most addaptable but explain the "big brain event" which happened in a very short period of time and explain why we lost our fur but then needed to make clothes to survive! This doesn't fit in with survival of the fittest, nature does not make clothes and without them we would have froze to death!
Just because no other animals look like humans or wear clothes does not mean they aren't evolving. Evolution is not a test question with one answer, it is the way that species overcome challenges and circumstances so they don't become extinct. The theory of evolution does not state that one day every dog, fish, bird and reptile will be able to interact and communicate with humans, it just states that species change over extended periods of time due to constraints put on that species. There.... More
You're right! Clothes don't come from nature! Clothing was made by early humans as a way too keep them warmer. We lost the hair on our bodies due to the lack of need for it. Why? Because people with the gene for less fur became dominant, they didn't die because they made their clothing for warmth. Your theory is horrible. Evolution makes complete sense. I don't agree, however, that all life began from one organsim.
Really? Your comment is suspect just as well. We lost our hair because we didn't need it but yet we made clothes because we needed it to keep warm?!?!
the earliest humans originated from africa where there was no need to for clothes to keep warm. the humans that travelled north however were in a foreign environment in which there was a need for clothes to keep warm. pipe down *****
Just so you know, one hypothesis that seems to be gaining support is that we were evolving to support an aquatic environment - that we were returning to the water, as it were. The "Big Brain" event interfered with that path, and since then we evolved the intelligence needed to create clothing much faster than we could re-evolve fur.
Just FYI
not all of us lost the hair on our bodies!
1. Land living ancestors of whales
2. Origin of feathers
3. evolutionary history of teeth
4. Origin of the vertebra skeleton
5. Fossil evidence
6. Homologies
7. Distribution in time and space
8. Evidence by example
All evidence of evolution. I also have evidence of bible errors if you want those to, because after all, it was written and translated by man.
Hahaha
I just read a different MNN article about inventors who were killed by their inventions. Has this guy ever seen terminator? He might end up on that list someday ; ) Haha
One word: Replicators....
This is absolutely fascinating. The possibilities that can arise from this research are unfathomable. It also raises new questions that if a scientist can do that here, maybe it has already been done somewhere else in the universe. Extraordinary. Absolutely extraordinary.
why not concentrate on eradicating killer viruses first then play God
technically that would be playing God as well
There's no money to be made for a cure, only the 'maybe it will work' treatment
oh the irony
For all we know following this study maybe even could lead to certain cures. Maybe if they actually do evolve they'll develop necessary things, required to make cures. Just sayin'.
to killing is better than creating...hmmm
To kill you need a creation first; and to create, you may need to kill first. It just depends on what you find as the most moral decision to kill.......or salvage......
hmm let me see. oh yes I understand you're asking why doesn't every single scientist give up their life calling and work to sit down and attempt to complete a single task MANY scientists are already working on?
Probably because that's an idiotic and narrow-minded question. It's not like the only people working on viruses are sitting around sucking their thumbs and drooling. Many scientists devote their lives to such a task. Don't ask such stupid questions. It's insulting to the people.... More
Most scientific breakthroughs occur on accident, while studying other things. So the only rational thing to do is: study everything. period.
Eradicating viruses 'is" playing God
A step closer to creating a race of bio-mechanoids.
Just as long as this doesn't lead to a "Battlefield Earth" Sequel, then he would be a mad man!
