$4 a gallon gas (cars)
Gas prices spiked at more than $4 a gallon in most of the country last summer in the face of frenzied oil-futures trading, rising demand, and an expected car boom in China and India. High prices were effective in pushing people to public transportation and to trade in SUVs for hybrids and smaller cars.
