I've always wanted to stay at the Grand Hotel but it's so expensive. It's understandable though with all the history and how beautiful it is. I've been to Mackinaw once and that literally was the most fun I have ever had. Going back to the city on a ferry at night with the bridge and island lit up... simply breath taking.

The Grand Hotel has been offering a "Bed and Breakfast" deal in June. You can have up to 4 people in 1 room and the yummy breakfast is included, all for 1 price! Call them and see if they are doing it this year; got to stay at least once in a lifetime!

Ah yes. Mackinac Island. On of the best of many little known gems in Michigan. For those unaware, the Grand Hotel, on the island, is the hotel used in the movie "Somewhere in Time", marking the only time a car was allowed to drive on the streets there,

I could save at least 25,000 of my income if I lived in one of these places. Gas and car notes for two cars is killing me...would love to retire in one of these places....

Hello Folks. I've spent most of my life here in Michigan and been to Mackinaw Island a few times for a day visit to experience the differences of culture from the mainland. Also they are best known for having the best tasting fudge and the worlds longest porch at the Grand Hotel.

600 people not a city. The last one is a city though. I think saying 'no cars' leaves you with these though. (I've been to Mackinac, it is nice, do stay at the Grand Hotel.)

Mackinac Island, Mich. (Pop.: 600)

While a horse-drawn carriage ride may seem like a romantic novelty to some, for the 600 residents of Lake Huron's Mackinac Island, it's a way of life. The 3.8-square-mile tourist destination had the foresight to ban all motorized vehicles back in 1898, and today only allows the engine rumbling of some snowmobiles and emergency vehicles. Otherwise, transport is by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage.
