Heavyweight steel construction and poor aerodynamics can hinder even the most technologically advanced vehicles, causing them to consume significantly more fuel. But the SL550 Roadster from Mercedes-Benz proves that attention to detail can pay off in a big way. A redesign of the vehicle, including a new suspension system and an ECO-Start/Stop system, has boosted its fuel efficiency by more than 14 percent.

The Mercedes-Benz Roadster SL550 has an all-new body constructed from diecast, hydro-formed and extruded aluminum that not only reduces its weight by approximately 300 pounds, but also makes it safer. The aluminum body has more than 20 percent stronger rigidity than its steel predecessor.
To cut back on the drag that can increase fuel consumption, Mercedes-Benz spent countless hours in virtual and actual wind tunnels, improving aerodynamics to achieve one of the lowest drag ratings in the industry.
The vehicle's new twin-turbo 4.6-liter V-8 engine increases power by 12 percent, and its advanced features helps to make it more environmentally friendly. With direct-injection technology, it can release microscopically fine-tuned fuel sprays in 0.1 milliseconds, cutting back on emissions, fuel consumption and noise. Its 7-speed automatic transmission and on-demand ancillary components like the alternator provide an additional boost in efficiency.
The new SL550 also gives drivers the ability to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions with its ECO-Stop/Start system. This feature automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other times when the car is idling, restarting the engine instantly when the brake is released.
