World's greenest autocross event shows off Mercedes F-CELL technology
Running on zero-emission hydrogen power, the Mercedes Benz B-class F-CELL car zooms around obstacles with effortless precision in what the automaker dubs “the world's greenest autocross event.” Customers participating in the Mercedes F-CELL pilot program came together to see what this fuel cell vehicle could do, performing maneuvers they probably won't get to try on the way to work.
F-CELL customers and their families were given access to two F-CELL vehicles and two "smart" electric cars. After getting a feel for the vehicles, they competed against each other in a timed race around a series of traffic cones. The event, held at the end of 2012, marked the two-year anniversary of F-CELL availability in the U.S.
Mercedes Benz planned the event to engage customers, says MBUSA Advanced Product Planning Supervisor Axel Walter. "Let's give them a chance to experience the F-CELL in a way that they would not experience that car in everyday life."
With a range of 190 miles, a full suite of safety features and a clean air promise — water is the sole byproduct — the F-CELL combines high performance and environmental consciousness with fuel cell propulsion that is suitable for everyday use.
