ATLANTA - Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Derek Lowe was arrested Thursday night on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.
Lowe was observed racing another driver down Peachtree Road, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was driving a 2011 Porsche Panamera — dubbed the world's most expensive hybrid car.
A state trooper stopped Lowe, 37, in Atlanta at 10 p.m. local time, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright told Reuters in an e-mail on Friday.
"The trooper detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," Wright said.
Lowe refused to take a breath test, officials said. The state trooper administered a field sobriety test and arrested the pitcher on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving and improper lane change, Wright said.
Lowe pitched the Braves' season opener against the Washington Nationals. He has two wins and three losses so far this season, with an earned run average of 3.21, according to the Atlanta Braves' Web site.
He is listed as a probable starter for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals in Atlanta.
