Researchers create car that can be steered by thought
Scientists in Germany have equipped a car with new technology that measures the driver's brain waves.

Excellent stuff, but I would never want to see this on the road. It would be much better for more mundane tasks such as allowing a parapalegic to navigate a wheelchair or more mundane tasks such as browsing the internet - once it becomes more sophisticated. People should never allow this technology to reach the streets as it (and peoples minds) will never prove flawless.
I think it will be a difficult task for EEG to act according to human brain.once it happens i am sure that accident number will reduce greatly.
i can't wait till this system if fullproof.
Honestly, I would prefer a robot car to one controlled with my brain, I would trust a computer more than most people driving now (seen googles robotic car fleet? (hundreds of thousands of miles, very minimal human intervention). In a couple years that will be no human intervention. And if we could network our cars together, they could collectively solve traffic problems.
wow what will they come up with next
:) is this only imagination?
This is no good! Imagine how many road rage incidents will end up with the car driving over a person that annoys you on the road. "Your Honour, I did brake for the victim, but my car accelerated on a negative thought"
Great thing man. If such cars are out then we could reduce accidents by a great margin
just bring up james bond on that computer there and you'll pretty much avoid any crashes whatsoever!
By the time this becomes commercial reality it will only be a part of the self-driving experience.
"Drive" "Reverse" "Brake" seem more like crude override commands to me.
More likely: "take me to 53rd street..." or, "slow down! hot babes on your six..." that sort of thing! :)
What if you fall asleep? would it still steer? or would it shut down aswell?
what happens when you fall asleep while driving now??
... some people
They should invent a computer that can be steered with our brain!
If they improve their technology that could make working so much faster.
In this case i think it also is very dangerous, if you don't concentrate on the commands for the car it could make faults and make a crash!
why are they trying to use this tech to steer a car, when it's so obviously much more suited for steering a wheelchair? People who drive cars are less likely to need this & people who sit in wheelchairs are much more likely to have issues with getting around. Plus the ability of this system to react fast is more appropriately scaled for a slow moving wheelchair.
Well, did you think of this:
With this technology, people in wheelchairs could drive a car. [when the response time gets better etc., like they say in the video, this is just a test, that technology is not nearly complete/optimal]
This technology is also being tested to improve working on a computer, this is just awesome. I'm imagining you could think about "open default internet browser", and you browser popping open, and then go check your emails, just by thinking about.... More
well people in wheel chairs would then be able to steer cars further expanding there mobility. BOOM.
Now let's take away all stimulus from the driver. Just sit there. Most people would just fall asleep if there were nothing to do. Actually DRIVING the car is the reason we buy cars! You cannot think your way into merging onto a fast moving freeway. Although I find the experiment interesting, it could be better used for other things. Cars is not one of them. How about typing words? Changing the channel on the TV? Operating a robotic lawnmower?
So, a car that can be driven by thought - not a good idea. How many of us when driving let little stray thoughts wander into our heads to distract us? Yep, coz I've done it myself, especially on long journeys and you start getting bored. On the plus side of course, footballers won't be allowed to have one because they're not actually capable of thinking.
here we go...a car that is running on $hit for brain power...stop this world and let me off!
This will come in handy when the cars finally drive themselves. With no controls in the vehicle, an override system will be needed so it can pull over in case you get sick from drinking too much in your automated car. The option to drink, or feed electronic addictions while riding will be the only thing that motivates people to let go control and allow the car to take over driving.
My car already does this. I think about turning left, and gee, I turn left. My brain tells my hands what to do and it happens. What ever.
it might be used to help people with missing limbs. think about that.
Exactly ! !
Why is this green tech? Hands are environmentally unfriendly?
Who said anyone wants to think about driving? People can't be bothered to pay any attention to it now. They'd rather text, take a call, or practice their obscene gesturing. The day they build a car that drives itself with almost zero user input is the day people will be lining up to buy one.
There seems to be alot of bugs to fix, like the delay time, and if you can accelerate while driving to the left or right. Also you're going to have to super focused or else you could can in an accident. I think if there ever is an emergency the driver should be able to drive the car normally and that will override the thought method.
Just don't talk on the cell at the same time. "I know your Right....I Left my phone in the office....the Faster we get this done.....Stop worrying about.....How about I pickup some Donuts.......
Don't let Sheen or Lohan know about this!
Germans also made the Trabant.
Bad idea......the number of attractive young women getting hit by cars is only going to skyrocket
Cars steered buy thought??? Evidently lots of folks here in the Central Savannah River Area (Georgialina), also known as the land of the one-car accident, have come to that conclusion way before the Germans...
Speak for yourself Jorge, but Southerners in the United States can hardly compare themselves to Germans. There is simply no comparison. Afterall, the Germans build Mercedes and BMW's, and the Americans build Chevrolet's and Fords. Again, no comparison.
"Needless to say, you probably don't want to be distracted while driving this vehicle." OK ladies. No more yakkin'. Oops.
Very scary. on bad days while driving I have thought "What if I just pull out in front of that 18 wheeler" sorry but true.
This is a scary thing. What if a schizophrenic drove the car? Would he be doing donuts in the parking lot and driving backwards at 60 mph? No, wait thats what teenagers do.
I think he has a great point there
Was your remark funny? Really?
