We have had Devon Rex cats for years as well as poodles and currently a poodle/bichon mix. All are LESS allergenic though as the article says there is no truly non-allergic animal. But a couple of things help: bathing them frequently (yes, even the cats. If you start young enough....) and some of the non-allergenic wipes for the pets' hair....use of over-the-counter non-drowsy antihistamines, seeing an allergist to find out, for you, the best mix of meds and possibly also allergy shots which builds
.... More
up a sort of immunity....all of these things can help.
Recent studies, several of them, have shown that kids raised with an older style way of life: that is, running and playing outside, access to normal dirt and flowers etc, seem to grow up having FEWER allergies/ asthma. Currently everything, even some toys, are advertised as "hypoallergenic" which gives modern kids a "boy in the bubble" lifestyle and little or no interaction with the normal germs, dirt, pollen, animal hair that millions of our ancestors grew up with, and which acted as a sort of natural immunotherapy.

I am terribly allergic to dander but got a Yorkie-Poo last November and have had few problems. The combination of a Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle combine 2 low-dander/low-shed breeds. He's also smart like a poodle but territorial like a terrier.

Not prairie dogs...not only are they high maintenance--the hay they eat is a common allergen. I suspect the dander, etc is too.
