Interested in dropping $100,000 for you and a friend to mingle with Hollywood elite?
That's the jaw-dropping cost for entry to a massive fundraiser that Barbra Streisand is hosting to raise cash for her Women's Cardiovascular Research and Education Program. The charity helps fund research and work at Cedars-Sinai's Women's Heart Center.
According to a new profile in The Hollywood Reporter, the 70-year-old actress/singer will open up her Malibu home this evening (June 14) to deep-pocketed guests (such as former President Bill Clinton) with exclusive performances not only from her, but also Josh Groban, David Foster and many others. In keeping with the heart-healthy theme, all of the food served will be vegan.
Streisand has already donated $5 million of her own money for what she hopes will eventually be a $20 million endowment. The cash will be used to "purchase state-of-the-art equipment and hire doctors and research scientists for the center."
According to WomenHeart.org, more than 42 million American women live with heart disease, many of them unaware of the symptoms that can lead to a heart attack.
"It's an epidemic," says Streisand. "Women don't have the chest pains or left-arm pains. They come in to the hospital with nausea and fatigue, but we don't have the proper diagnostic techniques or machinery because the research in the past 50 years has been done on men."
"Through gender-specific heart research, the development of new diagnostic tools, breakthrough clinical trials using stem cells to enable the heart to heal itself, and specialized care for women, the Women’s Heart Center is improving the detection and treatment of women’s heart disease," she writes on her site. "When you consider that 40 percent of women don’t survive their first heart attack, you can see why I’m excited about this work!"
