In only four months, entertainer Penn Jillette dropped more than 105 pounds., improved his energy, and stopped using six different blood pressure medications. No magic wand required.
The 6-foot-7 60-year-old, famously known as half of the comedy magic duo "Penn and Teller," said in a recent interview that his doctor urged the weight loss as a means to better regulate his blood pressure in conjunction with a half-dozen prescription drugs.
"My doctor said I needed to get my weight down, and if I brought it down 30 or 40 lbs. it would be a little easier to control," he told People. "And then he said something in passing that completely blew my mind – he said, ‘If you got down to 230, you probably wouldn’t need any of the meds.’"
With that goal in mind, Jillette decided to go on a crash diet between December 2014 and March 2015, restricting his caloric intake to roughly 1,000 daily. His body quickly reacted, burning as much a pound daily and pushing down his overall weight from 330 to 225 lbs. He then transitioned to Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Nutritarian diet, a vegan meal plan rich in vegetables, seeds, nuts and fruits and devoid of added salt or sugar.
“I eat unbelievable amounts of food but just very, very, very healthy food,” Jillette said.
He added that while he could probably cheat on his diet from time to time, he feels absolutely no desire to — saying that his previous ill health is nothing he wants to experience again.
“I have so much energy and I feel so good,” says Jillette. “I’m just plain happier.”
