Sweet, fair trade pineapples

Find juicy fair trade pineapples at your local Whole Foods store -- and enter to win a trip to Costa Rica.

Pineapples always remind me of that sweet song from Cabaret (“If I could, I would fill your entire room with pineapples!”) — and eating these juicy fruits are sweeter than ever this year, now that fair trade pineapples are finally easy to find.

Just stop by a Whole Foods to pick up a fair trade certified pineapple, grown by farmers in Costa Rica who are paid fair wages and practice greener farming methods. According to Whole Foods, a lot of the company’s pineapple supply is now organic, too. Not all the pineapples at Whole Foods are organic and/or fair trade, however, so be sure to look for the certification labels when picking out your eco-ethical fruit.

I was on a raw kick this weekend, and tried out some of Whole Foods’ raw-friendly pineapple recipes. Below’s the cool, minty and refreshing Pineapple-Cucumber salad I enjoyed over the weekend:

I also made the Fresh Pineapple Salsa and ate it with Leaf Organics’ raw flax seed crackers for an all-raw meal:

To celebrate these new fair trade pineapples, Whole Foods is giving away a trip to Costa Rica. Enter at Whole Foods’ pineapple page for a chance to win a nine-day trip for two to Costa Rica! You’ll find more yummy pineapple recipes there, too. Good luck!
