I live near Tulsa, OK, and the ex-Sun refinery (forgot the new owner's name) has been there since the start of the oil boom in the twenties. The most problem we have had is the smell of rotten eggs a lot right near the refinery. This refinery I have been told is the only one in the country that is allowed to refine sour crude, albeit we have all sweet crude here in OK.
We had one fool that moved near there and tried to sue them for the smell, but what do you expect when you live near.... More

If you knew your history, many American citizens were restricted to living in certain areas especially down in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas where racial segregation was widespread. And most of the areas they were restricted to just so happen to be near oil refineries. They couldn't just pack up & go to better areas because restrictive covenants & other Jim crow laws prevented that

Many refineries process sour crude throughout the USA.

Whoever told you that Tulsa refinery is the only one that processes sour crude is an idiot.

Not only is the east side of Toledo, OH dirty and smelly from the Sun Oil Company refinery there, the people that live around it are noticeably "different" to put it in nice terms. A local joke when you see a lower intelligence person in Toledo is to say that "they must be from the East Side". I worked at the refinery as a contractor for Environmental Analytics, a Houston based company that does VOC work, making sure the refinery is up to EPA code, and I can tell you that refinery was not, and.... You forgot Chalmette, LA... but don't worry most folks do for a reason. But after Katrina the Murphy's Oil refinery storage tanks failed discharging well over 100,000 gallons of oil to the surrounding neighborhood. May not be all that large, but the area is an EPA Superfund site today; cleanup is on-going and has impacted numerous homes in the area. A former boss had to have her entire yard excavated and house rebuilt after the damage. It was not pretty: oil muck mixed with floodwaters.... More

I live in the town that houses one of the largest oil refineries in the southern hemisphere, half my friends parents work in the plant and live adjacent to the area, within eye shot of the tanks and processing plants and we have no history of causal health defects.

So - I won't. I can vouch for all the comments on the areas in Texas mentioned, seeing as how I was raised here. Cancer, allergies, pulmonary disorders (Asthma, lung disease), heart problems, and mental disorders are far from rare occurrences around here due to the pollution. If you heard about the oil spill about two weeks ago where the tanker collided with a barge - that was about 5 to 10min from where I live.

You grow up used to it, but after moving to California for a year then.... More

Philadelphia, Pa.

Sunoco's Philadelphia refinery is just down the Schuylkill River from downtown Philly. Processing 335,000 barrels of oil a day, the plant is the seventh largest in the U.S.

Sunoco announced plans in October 2009 to expand operations at its Philadelphia plant after consolidation plans cut back production at some of its other facilities.
