Whether you’re prepping for a 5K, 10K or your first half-marathon, there’s some basic training tips you should know. Running coach and competitive marathoner Luke Lombardo is here to help you get started on the road to the finish line.
1. Stick to a schedule.
Find an appropriate training schedule based on the distance and amount of time that you're willing to commit to training. I've found Runner's World to be a great resource!
2. Find your motivation.
Do you feel energized after starting your day with a run? Is there a special playlist that helps you keep your stride? Learn what works best for you and keep doing it!
3. Don't give up.
You're human and there will definitely be a training day that you just aren't feeling up for
running and need to skip. Don't fret- it's totally natural to go through so ups and downs.
Just keep going.
4. Stay the course.
It's always better to slightly "under train" than over train. Don't add a lot of extra miles in
a week just because you're feeling good or want to make up for earlier in the week.
5. Enjoy the journey!
Training is the real competition. It's not all about race day- the finisher medal is just the icing on the cake.
