BANANA POWER: A banana a day to keep HIV away? (Photo: ian_ransley/Flickr) Your favorite oblong fruit might be even healthier than you realized. According to The Gazette (Montreal) newspaper, a new study has found that chemicals commonly found in bananas are as potent in preventing HIV as two synthetic anti-HIV drugs. Researchers say the findings could lead to a cheap new component for applied microbicides that prevent sexual transmission of HIV.
The miracle substance in bananas is called BanLec, a type of lectin, which are the sugar-binding proteins found in a variety of plants. Scientists have long been interested in lectins because of their ability to halt the chain reaction that leads to certain viral infections. In the case of BanLec, it works by binding naturally to the sugar-rich envelope that encases the HIV virus, thus blocking its entry into the body.
"The problem with some HIV drugs is that the virus can mutate and become resistant, but that's much harder to do in the presence of lectins," said lead author Michael D. Swanson. "Lectins can bind to the sugars found on different spots of the HIV-1 envelope, and presumably it will take multiple mutations for the virus to get around them."
Swanson and his colleagues noted that even modest success in developing BanLec into a vaginal or anal microbicide could save millions of lives. In fact, 20 percent coverage with a microbicide that is only 60 percent effective against HIV may prevent up to 2.5 million HIV infections in three years. Furthermore, a BanLec ointment would be much cheaper to produce and distribute than most current anti-retroviral medications that require the production of synthetic components.
One thing's for sure: new ways of stopping the transmission of HIV are desperately needed. Condoms are effective, but they are often used incorrectly or inconsistently, and in many cultures and developing countries women are not always in control of their sexual encounters. The introduction of a cheap, long-lasting, self-applied ointment derived naturally from bananas could change all of that.

Dear many get this HIV with out proper knowledge. At the age of 58 first time I have been to a girl. I have not any thing other than sucking her breast. She pressed her both the breast and unknowing I was continuing sucking. Serum has gone into my body I am really suffering now. Visit AIDS sites after reading still you feel like going to girls, you go ahead with all protection. God only can save you.

I think this is just a playful way to distract the world from reality. If this really does work the price of bananas will go up 200% next year. Then the price of the new drug will n ot be so cheap.

Parts of this article ring false. Standard-of-care antiviral therapy for HIV for the past ~15 years has been 3 drugs, not 2 (and never 1 drug alone), so saying that these banana-borne substances are “as potent in preventing HIV as two synthetic anti-HIV drugs” is meaningless and suspect. It’s also nose-wrinkling that those supposed two inferior-to-bananas drugs are not named, either in this posting or the 2 linked articles. That info seems essential to the claim, so what are they hiding?.... More

I would like to advice you to always keep off from naming products of other companies in your articles. It is prudent that the writer of the banana article did not name the so called inferior products. There take what you can understand and leave the other information.

The "two drugs" they're talking about are to prevent HIV infection, not to treat it.

There are a few Chinese medicine antivirals which have been shown clinically to take out HIV. You will never see them marketed this way until someone can patent them. The trouble is the imbalance in immune factors that leads to aids. Yes there is a Chinese medicine formula for that too, however legally I couldn't show research and sell it in the US. So I will simply tell you to look up the public domain recipes for xiao chai hu tang and shi quan da bu tang. I have no interest in selling.... More

...now that they can supply big pharmaceutical companies with artificially cheap bananas grown on poisons and blood in Central America. Lets use this opportunity to build a new banana industry that doesn't exploit, poison, and kill the growers and the land they work on.

So...is the BanLec (capitalized, like a Big Pharma invention) lectin in banana oil? Would using WD-40 as a lube work? That's rough trade, right there!

Wow..Monkeys are the cause of HIV. Who knew their diet is what helps stop the spread.
umm no

Actually, It wasn't really the monkey's fault. It was mans use of the monkeys to create the polio vaccine which caused HIV

Wow. Try getting your information from more than one source born of wild speculation and incomplete evidence. If you look into the claims of Polio being to blame, a lot of things don't add up. 1) the cells used to grow Polio virus are macaque monkey kidney cells and do not support growth or infectivity with HIV or SIV (simian immunodificiency virus), 2) original vials of test vaccine were tested for HIV infection - none found, 3) evidence indicates that HIV has been in human populations.... what we need is a hell of a lot better funding options for the school age kids and drop outs. I am HIV+ and have been since i was 23 years old. I was fortunate enough to be educated on the risks but was unfortunate enough not to observe them. While living with HIV is a lot easier now days than it once was it is still a constant struggle. The battle at this point is that even if kids and young adults are educated, we have to assume they would make the right choice when the time came. There.... More |
