All hero, all heart
Fred Hodges holds a surfboard he decorated during a "paddle-out" memorial on May 6 in honor of NFL star Junior Seau in Oceanside, Calif.

Seau, who played for various NFL teams including the San Diego Chargers, the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home on May 2. Hundreds of surfers and spectators gathered for the memorial, which took place about 100 yards away from the deceased linebacker's beachfront home in Oceanside.

Memorial surfing
A surfer wearing a #55 jersey — the number Seau wore during his time with the San Diego Chargers — rides a wave during the "paddle-out" memorial.

Family members, who said they had no indiction that Seau was depressed, are considering donating his brain to research to see if there any links between sports-related concussions and depression.
