I don't like how the article is titled, "the truth about fat women and self-control", but the article doesn't give us any information on whether this is was true or not, just that the stereotype is apparently has negative effects on obese women. The disproving tone of the article seems to imply that the hypothesis is false, but actual empirical data that I am aware of, such as the UCLA study showed that obese people really do make a much smaller brain effort to resistant food.... Hogwash. I was an obese kid from the age of 8 to 13. When I turned 13 and hit puberty I decided that I did not want to be fat anymore and lost 100 pounds in 3 months and never looked back. I went on to do modeling for a major health club and have always kept fit. I am now 59, look in my 40's and still in great shape. Just do the math foks -- calories burned have to be more than calories consumed. I hear women whine all of the time about not being able to lose weight and how they don't eat.... More
1. Comparing the ability for a male at 13 to lose weight with a grown woman is an erroneous comparison.
2. Metabolisms are as different as people. So what works for one may starve another.
3. Multiple issues medical, physical and psychological must necessarily be addressed. Will power will only take some people so far. The body is a complicated animal.
4. If it were ALWAYS as simple as calories in/out we'd have a heck of a lot more skinny people. No weight loss.... More
To Each Their Own. Why do we even have to judge?? Let people be who they are, accept them for their differences and stop being so judgmental as a society. We push young girls to be thin, look at toddlers and tiaras...make the little girls sexy and they will be "important and successful??" Is that all there is?? The outward appearance of a woman??
A size 12 - 14 is "plus" size?? Pushing the envelope more and more.

Fat people eat too much - period. If you don't burn as many calories as you eat - then you get fat. It really is that simple. The pounds of lard around your waist just did not fall from the sky - you ate it in one form or another.

While that is true for many people (and probably a good many people who are overweight), the metabolic process that stores energy in your body is not that simple.
In people with dysfunctional endocrine systems, certain hormones (cortisol, insulin, etc) can be over-produced. These hormones signal the body to store calories as fat. Intake and burn, fit the bill the grand majority of the time. Do some people have medical reasons? Yes of course, some do. Just like the fact that some people have learning disabilities, doesn't mean all people who act stupidly have learning disabilities.
