The truth about getting the flu shot
To most medical professionals, the advantages of the flu vaccine far outweigh any risks. But other professionals feel completely the opposite.

What's more scary: Getting the flu or getting a flu shot? (Photo: Dmitry Lobanov/

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on average 5 to 20 percent of the population in the U.S. gets the flu each year. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related complications, and anywhere from a few thousand to 50,000 people die each year from flu.

The best way to prevent getting the flu, says the CDC, is by getting a seasonal flu vaccination each year. But do the benefits of getting the flu shot far outweigh the risks? Can potential lethal illnesses manifest years later in life, a direct result from getting yearly flu shots?

The truth about getting the flu vaccine is difficult to ascertain, with opinions about its safety differing widely depending on which medical professional you ask.

The flu shot does not give you the flu, most of the time
One thing both proponents and opponents of the flu shot agree on is that there are a few different types of flu vaccines, and sometimes, adverse side effects do occur from the shot.

Currently, there are four types of flu vaccines on the market:
  • A standard flu shot
  • A high-dose flu shot for those 65 and older
  • An intradermal-administered shot for those who are needle-phobic
  • A nasal spray

Contrary to what many people believe, the first three vaccines listed above do not contain the live flu virus.

“The vaccine is taken from two of the hundreds of different proteins that compose an influenza virus,” says the Mayo Clinic and Infectious Disease Society of America's Dr. Greg Poland. “Taking merely two surface proteins off the virus does not mean it’s live; there’s no organism there … it’s not possible to cause infection or disease with it … the flu shot does not give you the flu,” adds Poland.

As for the nasal spray, which does contain live flu viruses, Dr. Dan Harper, who is against vaccinations of all kinds, is especially leery of this methodology.

“You have 100 million viruses sprayed up the nose, along with other things like MSG (monosodium glutamate) and sugar, which causes inflammation. And since the virus also contains egg [proteins], you run the risk of introducing an avian retrovirus, which can cause encephalitis in humans.

“And so here you are spraying this up into your nose, just a few millimeters from the brain with MSG traveling across the blood-brain barrier, causing potential damage to neurotransmitters,” says Harper, who is based Solana Beach, Calif.

Does the government conclude that flu shots are 100 percent safe and effective?

No, but close to it, though adverse side effects have been documented in peer-reviewed medical journals. For example, a study in Human and Experimental Toxicology reported that there were 590 fetal-loss reports per 1 million pregnant women vaccinated (or 1 per 1,695) during the 2009-2010 flu season (generally regarded as October-March, though flu symptoms can occur any time of the year). The adverse events were tracked by the appropriately named Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, database.

In a review of vaccines conducted by researchers at the Institute of Biosecurity at St. Louis University, the co-authors concluded, “Vaccination remains a critical intervention during pandemics, but current production technology requires several months to develop sufficient vaccine to meet anticipated worldwide need…. Vaccines for use … during an epidemic are in development but … logistical obstacles to timely distribution exist [though] intensive research is underway to identify a universal vaccine.”

The Institutes of Medicine released a consensus report last year, which concluded that despite 135 vaccine adverse events in the study, few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines, including the flu shot.

According to most peer-reviewed research, the chances of encountering problems are statistically minimal; however, possible adverse effects from flu vaccine documented in medical literature include:
  • Febrile seizure
  • Narcolepsy
  • Asthma
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome

Humane reasons to get the flu shot
Some medical professionals, such as Dr. Elizabeth Baorto, division director of Pediatric Infectious Disease at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, N.J., strongly believe that with rare exception — such as someone with an egg allergy — everybody 6 months and older should get a flu shot every year.

“Protecting oneself is an altruistic act. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself, but you protect those around you as well,” says Baorto. “We are fortunate that we have a cheap and effective way of protecting ourselves with the flu vaccine.”

Will the flu shot protect you from a superbug pandemic outburst?

Not according to the aforementioned ardent vaccine opponent Harper (who is on the board of the nonprofit, Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation), who himself contracted polio in 1952, was paralyzed for seven years, and has seven children, none of whom have ever been vaccinated.

Harper thinks the flu vaccine lacks efficacy because the CDC has to guess which strain of influenza will be dominant in a particular year and it doesn't always guess correctly.

“[The CDC] only choose three to five strains of influenza A out of 250-plus strains, and they take only two or three influenza B strains out of 75-100 that are out there at any one time. If they don’t guess the right one, you’re going to get sick. You’re putting your faith in the CDC’s ability to guess the one that might be a pandemic.”

So, is it in your best interest to get the flu vaccine, regardless if a superbug is headed our way?

Poland unequivocally thinks so. “Which risk would you take?” he asks: “One in a million of a side effect or a one in 10,000 risk being hospitalized or dying. Flu-related illnesses cost the U.S. $90 billion a year, or almost one percent of GDP,” adds Poland.

But in contrast, Harper believes the risks of the flu shot far outweigh any benefit.

He claims that formaldehyde is an ingredient in the common flu shot and is a known carcinogen. “Another ingredient in the flu shot, thimerosal, contains mercury, which is known to impair neurological and immune systems. There are detergents, antibiotics, chemicals and allergens like polysorbate-80 that causes infertility,” adds Harper, along with other ingredients he deems unsafe for human consumption.

Indeed, the CDC does list some of these ingredients on its website. But the CDC claims, that at least in the case of thimerosal, “There is no evidence of harm caused by the small amounts of thimerosal in flu vaccine.”

Still, Harper is not convinced: “Someone who gets vaccinated could say, ‘Well the flu didn’t kill me.’ But when you’re sitting there with Alzheimer’s, ALS, MS or you’re watching your kid develop seizures or become autistic you’re going to kick yourself in the butt for allowing your child or you yourself receiving it. It’s frightening to me the stuff they put in the vaccine. These diseases, at least in part, are because of vaccines,” concludes Harper.

Keep in mind that there is a multi billion dollar industry behind proving that vaccinations are safe. How much money is behind those who just want the truth?...... not much

They claim the shots can't give you the flu.
Just 3 days back I had my annual shot & once again I'm coming down with the flu.
This has happened to me shortly after each shot for the past 3 years at least & I can't remember a flu season where the vaccine has offered me any protection from catching a severe dose of flu.
Next year I'm determined to go without this "Protection"

only a little bit of mercury? my mom has an analogy that i hate when she uses it on me but she is right. if you make brownies, but put a little bit of dog poop in the brownies, would you still eat the brownies? only a little bit of one of the most dangerous substances to humans in a flu shot? no thank you

Unit-dose flu vaccines have NO mercury. It's astounding how much people can act like sheep and overreact to misinformation. Even for those vaccines that do contain mercury, a halfway intelligent person would bother to understand hazardous substances before labeling all mercury as one of the most hazardous materials. It simply isn't true. Try reading real science and maybe looking up ethyl mercury, methyl mercury, elemental mercury, etc. But you won't let the truth get in the way of

i understand your position, but like many on this comment thread, i decide to let my immune system do what it was made to do. if i keep my immune system healthy, it keeps me healthy. why give it chemicals and other things that aren't supposed to be there? if i do get sick with whatever, i will deal with it. every choice has consequences. i simply think that getting these shots are more of a risk than benefit.

A healthy human immunity system is fully capable of guarding against any problem that might threaten the body, but life styles, thought patterns and behaviors, pollution and various other environmental factors all effect the immunity systems ability to work optimally. Eat and sleep well, exercise, think positively and BELIEVE in your immunity system - be greatful for it - and it will serve you well. Immunisation is not neccessary for everyone.

Craig, I happen to be doing a paper right now on the topic of flu vaccinations. vaccinations or the holistic approach? im curious on your comment not "necessary for everyone". I need a third argument which is people who feel they need the flu vaccination and a healthy lifestyle or people who feel only some people need the vaccination. any thoughts or sites would be helpful thanks.

This is RUBBISH... Ever hear of keeping up your immune system?? THAT'S what it is there for! The ONLY people I know or have heard of getting the flu, GOT the flu shot... 1 died of complications (a friend's aunt) the other died of strange and unknown complications within 24 hours of getting the shot. Another had her life threatening immune disorder retriggered after her boyfriend got the flu shot to protect her... PEOPLE PLEASE RECLAIM YOUR LIVES AND YOUR FEARS and STOP handing your

It would seem more logical to treat the virus after finding out what it is. Let the body do what it is geared to do in fighting along with the help of meds.

i am 64 years old and have had they flue a couple of times, chicken pox, and a few common colds. It has been 30 years or more since I have had the flu. I now take vitamins and 1500 milligrams of vitamin C during the cold and flu season. So far that has seemed to keep me healthy. I also watch my diet, exercise, and get plenty of rest. Together all these things together seem to boost immune system. I could get the flu tomorrow but I believe I have lowered my risks.

I think cases are estimated by taking a number of sample populations, determining how many people from those samples did and did not receive the flu, and then they can pretty accurately calculate the percentages of people who got sick. I just tested positive for the flu yesterday. I have never gotten a flu shot in my life and this is my second time getting the annual flu in 26 years. I think getting the flu is a natural part of life. I don't feel a need to tamper with the body, but rather

try to be healthy and natural.

It's easy to say "I've never had the flu and will never get the shot" until one has had influenza. Very few people in the US today under the age of 40 or 50 has had first hand experience with serious infectious illnesses. So-called childhood diseases such as measles and mumps have been mostly eradicated, most say due to the effectiveness of vaccines. This means that at this point in history a generation or two has come of age without getting 'really sick'. It'
.... More
s hard, under these circumstances, to appreciate just how powerful some microorganisms are. Are vaccines without risk? No. Are these diseases without risk? A bigger, much bigger, no. I never had a flu shot until I got older and had the flu, as I'd grown up thinking that flu shots were for "old people". I felt sicker than I'd ever felt in my life (including the several times I've been hospitalized). The flu is unmistakeable. Symptoms are intense, severe, and come on fast, as in within a couple hours fast. The fatigue and sense of being acutely ill is nearly overwhelming. Fever is high and painful, the coughing racks your bones, and you fill with mucus. Yes, if you're strong enough--as I was--you 'fight it off'. If you are aging, or very young, or ill with some other condition, or immunocompromised, of if you simply do not recognize the severity of your situation early enough, and take steps to assist your own immune response, you can, and people do every year, get into serious trouble quickly with influenza. As imperfect as vaccines might be, there is a very good reason that they have been developed: they are very effective at preventing death from any number of serious, often life-threatening, conditions. In 2012, many in America do not appreciate that the primary reason many diseases are now rare is due to widespread vaccination for the simple reason that they have never lived at a time when vaccines were not in widespread use. Should vaccines, and vaccination programs, not be evaluated as to safety and improved as much as possible? Of course they should. But until someone comes up with something better, I, and my kids, are vaccinated.

The idea of injecting a perfectly healthy human being with anything seems completely illogical. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

CDC says approximately 40% of people who get a flu shot get the flu (albeit a milder case).

What percent fo people who do NOT get a flu shot get the flu?

NOT as many as they would have you believe.... About 20,000 cases of flu were reported in the US in 2012. There are about 314,000,000 people in the US. That equals to about 6%. They would have you believe it is 50% or more. Absolutely NOT TRUE

Back2Eden:

The number of reported cases of the flu is not the equivalent of actual cases. Most healthy people will simply let the flu run its course without going to a doctor. Secondly, 20,0000 does not equal 6% of 314 million. Figure out how to do basic math before throwing up "statistics" like this.

Flu shots are full of poison, as are all vaccinations. To me even going so far as to get a shot of any foreign substances in order to deter the chance of 'catching the flu' or another illness is saying to your body that it's not good enough. You have an immune system for a reason! The more you inject your body with foreign things like vaccines the less effective the natural functions will become. Its like if a man takes testosterone supplements, the more he does the less his body will
.... More
produce testosterone on its own. The immune system is the same way, it cannont do its work if you are giving it a crutch. But the truth is that all disease is a manifestation of negative vibrations which one chooses to maintain within themselves. That is the root of it, so if you want to be healthy, be the best person you can be. Be Love.

I seriously doubt that Polio, Measles, Mumps, Chicken Pox, etc. are the result of "negative vibrations (whatever those are). The are caused by viruses. Methinks there is plenty of disinformation on both sides of this debate.

Take ALL the prescribed pain killers in the ENTIRE WORLD...80% is used by good old USA. the world population is OVER 7Billion!!! The USA is just around 315Million. .....We have a MAJOR problem! Vaccines and antibiotics are used to drive one thing away from you...Your money. And Big Pharma will do EVERYTHING legal or otherwise if it can get away with it..to gain your trust. This sounds extreme, and is surely not meant to be a blanket statement as there are MANY products that deal with real problems.
.... More
BUT, the doors for this ill practice is WIDE open, and we have been experiencing it for some time. Our system is now a corporate communism of big companies having the law makers in their pockets. We are the collective gods to help ourselves. Do something about it! Read, educate yourself, be proactive!

Phil is absolutely right. Read Melody Petersen's book

"Our Daily Meds" to see what an investigative reporter discovered about how the big drug companies lie, cheat, bribe, etc, etc to sell drugs or get doctors to.

Outlines it in ways that will make you think about those ads you see everywhere as well as in your doctors office(s).
