The truth about getting the flu shot
To most medical professionals, the advantages of the flu vaccine far outweigh any risks. But other professionals feel completely the opposite.

What's more scary: Getting the flu or getting a flu shot? (Photo: Dmitry Lobanov/

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on average 5 to 20 percent of the population in the U.S. gets the flu each year. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related complications, and anywhere from a few thousand to 50,000 people die each year from flu.

The best way to prevent getting the flu, says the CDC, is by getting a seasonal flu vaccination each year. But do the benefits of getting the flu shot far outweigh the risks? Can potential lethal illnesses manifest years later in life, a direct result from getting yearly flu shots?

The truth about getting the flu vaccine is difficult to ascertain, with opinions about its safety differing widely depending on which medical professional you ask.

The flu shot does not give you the flu, most of the time
One thing both proponents and opponents of the flu shot agree on is that there are a few different types of flu vaccines, and sometimes, adverse side effects do occur from the shot.

Currently, there are four types of flu vaccines on the market:
  • A standard flu shot
  • A high-dose flu shot for those 65 and older
  • An intradermal-administered shot for those who are needle-phobic
  • A nasal spray

Contrary to what many people believe, the first three vaccines listed above do not contain the live flu virus.

“The vaccine is taken from two of the hundreds of different proteins that compose an influenza virus,” says the Mayo Clinic and Infectious Disease Society of America's Dr. Greg Poland. “Taking merely two surface proteins off the virus does not mean it’s live; there’s no organism there … it’s not possible to cause infection or disease with it … the flu shot does not give you the flu,” adds Poland.

As for the nasal spray, which does contain live flu viruses, Dr. Dan Harper, who is against vaccinations of all kinds, is especially leery of this methodology.

“You have 100 million viruses sprayed up the nose, along with other things like MSG (monosodium glutamate) and sugar, which causes inflammation. And since the virus also contains egg [proteins], you run the risk of introducing an avian retrovirus, which can cause encephalitis in humans.

“And so here you are spraying this up into your nose, just a few millimeters from the brain with MSG traveling across the blood-brain barrier, causing potential damage to neurotransmitters,” says Harper, who is based Solana Beach, Calif.

Does the government conclude that flu shots are 100 percent safe and effective?

No, but close to it, though adverse side effects have been documented in peer-reviewed medical journals. For example, a study in Human and Experimental Toxicology reported that there were 590 fetal-loss reports per 1 million pregnant women vaccinated (or 1 per 1,695) during the 2009-2010 flu season (generally regarded as October-March, though flu symptoms can occur any time of the year). The adverse events were tracked by the appropriately named Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, database.

In a review of vaccines conducted by researchers at the Institute of Biosecurity at St. Louis University, the co-authors concluded, “Vaccination remains a critical intervention during pandemics, but current production technology requires several months to develop sufficient vaccine to meet anticipated worldwide need…. Vaccines for use … during an epidemic are in development but … logistical obstacles to timely distribution exist [though] intensive research is underway to identify a universal vaccine.”

The Institutes of Medicine released a consensus report last year, which concluded that despite 135 vaccine adverse events in the study, few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines, including the flu shot.

According to most peer-reviewed research, the chances of encountering problems are statistically minimal; however, possible adverse effects from flu vaccine documented in medical literature include:
  • Febrile seizure
  • Narcolepsy
  • Asthma
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome

Humane reasons to get the flu shot
Some medical professionals, such as Dr. Elizabeth Baorto, division director of Pediatric Infectious Disease at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, N.J., strongly believe that with rare exception — such as someone with an egg allergy — everybody 6 months and older should get a flu shot every year.

“Protecting oneself is an altruistic act. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself, but you protect those around you as well,” says Baorto. “We are fortunate that we have a cheap and effective way of protecting ourselves with the flu vaccine.”

Will the flu shot protect you from a superbug pandemic outburst?

Not according to the aforementioned ardent vaccine opponent Harper (who is on the board of the nonprofit, Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation), who himself contracted polio in 1952, was paralyzed for seven years, and has seven children, none of whom have ever been vaccinated.

Harper thinks the flu vaccine lacks efficacy because the CDC has to guess which strain of influenza will be dominant in a particular year and it doesn't always guess correctly.

“[The CDC] only choose three to five strains of influenza A out of 250-plus strains, and they take only two or three influenza B strains out of 75-100 that are out there at any one time. If they don’t guess the right one, you’re going to get sick. You’re putting your faith in the CDC’s ability to guess the one that might be a pandemic.”

So, is it in your best interest to get the flu vaccine, regardless if a superbug is headed our way?

Poland unequivocally thinks so. “Which risk would you take?” he asks: “One in a million of a side effect or a one in 10,000 risk being hospitalized or dying. Flu-related illnesses cost the U.S. $90 billion a year, or almost one percent of GDP,” adds Poland.

But in contrast, Harper believes the risks of the flu shot far outweigh any benefit.

He claims that formaldehyde is an ingredient in the common flu shot and is a known carcinogen. “Another ingredient in the flu shot, thimerosal, contains mercury, which is known to impair neurological and immune systems. There are detergents, antibiotics, chemicals and allergens like polysorbate-80 that causes infertility,” adds Harper, along with other ingredients he deems unsafe for human consumption.

Indeed, the CDC does list some of these ingredients on its website. But the CDC claims, that at least in the case of thimerosal, “There is no evidence of harm caused by the small amounts of thimerosal in flu vaccine.”

Still, Harper is not convinced: “Someone who gets vaccinated could say, ‘Well the flu didn’t kill me.’ But when you’re sitting there with Alzheimer’s, ALS, MS or you’re watching your kid develop seizures or become autistic you’re going to kick yourself in the butt for allowing your child or you yourself receiving it. It’s frightening to me the stuff they put in the vaccine. These diseases, at least in part, are because of vaccines,” concludes Harper.

Oh my gosh! We're so fortunate to have heroes like you around! Yes, you deserve praise and adulation for your bravery. I bet there are black vans sitting outside your house day and night. What crap. Notice there's no data presented? No references. Everytime someone wants to spread a lie without presenting data, they blame the 'media'. The fact is the flu KILLS. THAT is a FACT. The FACT is vaccines prevent the flu. So unless you present EVIDENCE you're just another blow hard endangering children You

It is not a FACT that the vaccine PREVENTS the flu!! Do some research before YOU put yourself out there as an EXPERT.

How many cases of polio were there in 1940? How many today?

Oh. None today. You were saying about vaccines?

Polio's never been a threat. The corrupt health industry used it to launch their poisonous vaccine campaigns. FACT: 95% of those infected with polio never have any symptoms, thus are totally unaffected by the disease. the remaining 5% of cases experience flu-like symptoms lasting only a few days. It’s only one in 200 cases that actually result in any paralysis, or about 0.5% of all polio cases.

You answered your own question, didn't you? I'm a chemist with a degree from the University of Pittsburgh. The same place Jonas Salk developed the killed virus vaccine. Albert Sabin developed the ORAL polio vaccine which uses a weakned LIVE virus strain. The fact you can't read and can't tell the difference between the SALK and SABIN vaccines marks you as an ideologue who would willingly placed children's lives in danger. I PERSONALLY received the Salk Vaccine as part of a trial at Pitt when the
.... More
Salk vaccine was developed. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Americans HAD polio. Today the disease is unknown. Look at the statistics instead of dumbing down your arguments with ideas that endanger children

It's also a fact that the vaccine does not always prevent the flu. Most people that the "flu" kill are struggling with stabilizing other chronic illnesses. People don't die of just the flu. It's a fact. The fact is that in any given year, the flu vaccine only covers 3 or 4 strains out of 250 strains of the flu virus. You may think the vaccine is your winter parka, but it's just a speedo.... one that no one is interested in paying money to do the research that is needed on the long term effects of
.... More
its use. Then they may have to stop selling and making so much money off of it. "There isn't evidence of..." is NOT a comforting term. It's an easy opt out of answering a question that desperately needs to be answered.

Well I guess such a comment is to be expected from someone who's never been involved in chemical process development

To identify a new strain, develop the vaccine, produce it and bring it to market in a year is quite an achievement. Those of us who are chemical engineers, but not involved in pharmaceuticals have alot of respect for the folks who can do this.

That is not the process at all--the powers that be get together in February each year and make an educated GUESS as which 2 or3 of the 250+ strains of flu out there might be the culprits this year... then they come up with a vaccine that MIGHT help to stop the recipients from contracting the disease... there is very little sustainable reserach done to PROVE the efficacy of the vaccine -- no time for that, oh yes gotta rush it on to the market so all the unsuspecting folks will anti up a little
.... More
cash so they will be safe?? Not seeing the heroism in accomplishing such a feat in under a year! There is no verifiable research showing that those who do NOT receive a vaccine contract flu at any greater rates than those that do... oh then we can talk about all the questionable ingredients in the vaccine, but that is a topic for another time!!

Ok Bob. Try this on for size. According to the CDC the majority of individuals that end up in the hospital because of the flu, had flu shots. Ask your doctor about how effective the shot really is, if he or she is honest, they will tell you that is runs about a year behind. Why? Because they cannot predict which strain will pop up and bite you, so they look at previous years and guess. As for me, the only times I have been hospitalized was with the flu after getting the shot. I refuse to
.... More
get their flu and then risk getting another flu on top of it. If you want to avoid the flu, seal yourself in a hemetically sealed bubble. The best way to avoid getting super sick from the flu is to quit thinking that you avoid disease and embrace natural immunity. I rarely get the flu these days and when I do, I am down for less time than those who get the "flu" shot. As for someone dying from flu, the actual cause is something else. Healthy people don't die from the flu, but people that are immune compromised for one reason or the other do.

People don't die from the flu??? Tell that to the 20-50 MILLION that died from the epidemic of 1918-1920! And young children are much more likely to die from the flu (due to dehydration) than an adult! If you were ever hospitalized due to the flu, then you had more problems than just the flu! You were obviously dehydrated and had electrolye imbalance from it.....that's what causes deaths! Not the flu vaccine!

The 1918 -20 epidemic was actually caused by the introduction of aspirin, the new wonder drug of it's day. Suppression of the natural ability to fight a bacterial infection, the fever, resulted in a cytokine storm that overwhelmed the body's ability to fight it. Most deaths were the result of pneumonia, not the flu. Get your facts straight.

Though aspirin made things worse due to them not knowing what a safe dosage was, it was not the "cause" of the 1918 flu.

That pandemic killed 50 MILLION people, not all of which were on mega doses of aspirin lol

I appreciate your comment but the flu was not caused by aspirin. Actually aspirin was saving lives during the epidemic. I know that from my grandma who saved her village with the big bottle of aspirin brought from abroad by my grandpa. Nobody died because the aspirin was successfully fighting very high fever and other symptoms. The flu virus that caused that epidemic was the cross between bird and human virus against which our immune system had no defences. I am personally against of overuse of pharmaceuticals
.... More
but sometimes they are necessary. They save lives when used in critical situations. The flu shots can be used by people whose system is compromised but healthy individuals should try to stay healthy taking good care of themselves on a daily basis with a proper diet, exercise and rest. For example plant based diet eliminates the animal protein that is the food for the spreading virus. That is why they are grown on eggs and gelatine in the labs. Thanks for listening.

Uh, no Patrick. The vaccine is not a 'year behind'. It's a year AHEAD. The vaccine is based on a PREDICTION of how the virus will evolve. If science could tell us only what happened yesterday it would be religion. They don't 'guess', they make a prediction based on evidence. It's certainly not 100% but evolution is not an exact science. And no one cares about your Reader's Digest anecdotes about your barber's Aunt Nettie's hairdresser. That's the problem with you latter day luddites. You can't argue
.... More
evidence so you argue touchy feely emotions. Sorry, sport, that doesn't cut it. Your view is simply wrong and endangers public health. And, yes, healthy people DO die from the flue. In addition, what's the difference? YOu saying the life of someone who's sick..or who's immune system is immature, like a CHILD....is of no value?

To hold so tightly to the infallibility of science and medicine IS RELIGION, and shows intentional refusal to see its past failures through out history. You obviously know very little about either science, medicine, or religion.

Spouting cliches is a wonderful substitute for thinking. Science is littered with dead theories. In fact scientists rejected one of the most successful theories in the history of science...Newton's mechanics, in favor of relativity. So your self aggrandizing pontificating about 'science as religion' is totally useless and merely shows you regurgitate nothing more than something you read on a bumpersticker.

More weakminded New Age crap. The laws of chemistry are the laws of chemistry. If the flu virus enters the cells of your body you WILL get the flu, absent a flu shot. If you want to believe in fairy tales, stick with the wizard of Oz.

Wow Bob you are the most ignorant and uninformed person I have ever seen. The facts are right in front of you. If you cut your finger do you have to tell yourself to heal? NO! you're body knows what to do. If you are healthy, even if the flu virus enters your cells, your body will know how to fight it. So you may get some sniffles but you wouldn't get these deadly reactions to the flu. The flu shot is KNOWN to have chemicals, toxins, antibiotics, etc so that fact is irrefutable. The flu shot is not
.... More
science its complete guess work and its not about our protection at all, its all for profit! I mean look around if the flu shot was so great for you they wouldn't have to advertise it on every tv and radio station, billboards, store fronts etc. You can go ahead and poison yourself out of fear but i'll make sure i'm completely healthy so I have nothing to worry about.

Anonymous...there are 3 factors that determine how virulent an infection is: 1. The number of organisms that enter the body 2. The virulence of the organism 3. The susceptibility of the host You can model the virulence by 2 competing chemical reactions, based on the Arrhenius equation: 1, the rate of growth of infecting population (dN=Ae(expEkt)C) 2. The rate of response of the host (dNh=Ahe(expEhkt)Ch) the balance between those 2 equations will determine whether or not the infection is successful.
.... More
It's chemistry. And if the rate of growth of the FIRST equation is greater than the 2nd, the host will succumb It's straight chemistry. So, you were saying about ignorance? And, no, the vaccine is not poisonous. I suggest you go back and tell the victims of the 1918 flu epidemic...millions of whom died...that they were lucky there was no vaccine!

I am just an ordinary citizen observer. I do not get flu shots. I do not get sick. What I question is the "truth" as it is presented by those that stand to benefit from the partial truth information presented to the public on this topic. I have observed that there is an agressive rise in childhood mental disorders since school mandated vaccination policies have gone into effect. My observation leads me to question the overall benefit of the present methods in vaccine development and manufacture.
.... More
To me, it is obvious that the medical "machine" has convinced itself that the benefit outweighs the risk for the short term prevention of the flu but has failed to explain the long term and overall jump in trends for serious childhood and elderly brain performance related health problems. Why is there such a rapid rise in these trends at the exact same time the push to vaccinate (at a price) is on.
