The air is so polluted with particulates in Phoenix and its environs that I developed severe asthma one winter there, though I have no history of it, and had to move after living there for three years. I knew something was wrong when I spent one summer in Seattle to escape the Phoenix inferno and found that I could breathe so well and felt so good on the Puget Sound, I took up jogging outside again. When I returned to Phoenix after that summer, within two weeks I was ill with horrific allergies.... More

"Accel-erate to drive clean air" 08/28/2011 14:53 PM

I am a 48 year old Native Arizonan. I too have become disenchanted with the quality of our air and somewhat disappointed with the cookie cutter homes. However I am taking strides in a new direction. I will be opening the first all electric automobile rental agency in Phoenix. I am inspired to write contracts with corporations that advocate "Green" status to rent zero emission vehicles for the use of their guests while visiting the Valley of the "Sun." For those that chose to negate living.... More

I lived in Scottsdale for 17 years. Though I had a terrific zest for life, this place sucked it right out of me. I am very well traveled, retiring at 47 as a millionair. Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale is the single worst city I have ever traveled to with regard to temperature, air quality, social status, culture, and crime. Talk to almost ANY resident and they will all tell you of their plans to get out. Homes are absolutely hideous built with inferior stucco, cheap siding and red brick.... More

I have known many "millionair"s in my time, yet never recall ever heard one describe himself as such. Faiirly humble people, comfortable-in- their- own- skins types. The only bitter ones are the so-called $30k a year "millionares" that the recession thankfully flushed from our midst. The air (and character)is much cleaner with your absence. Thanks for leaving !

For miles you can see the billowing clouds of dust the farmers create in the West Valley. They are "grandfathered" and continue to create the unhealthy conditions and cause Maricopa County to be fined for exceeding particulates in the air. Time to change the law!!!

I was raised in AZ and lament the gorgeous, clear blue skies we once had. But due to excessive breeding and moving around, people are polluting Phoenix up worse than Los Angeles. I go between the two. In LA I can see clear skies quite often. In phoenix, there's often a greyish haze in the air and in the sky.

I meant to say I lament the LOSS of the clear blue skies.

this report is crazy! 09/18/2010 23:13 PM

I have lived in Mesa for ten years and have visited Scottsdale many times. For one thing, Mesa is almost two thousand feet higher(where I live) than Phoenix. Most every day I look out in my back yard and see clear blue skies!

You are blind 07/30/2011 21:25 PM

Be serious, did a travel company pay you or what? I lived there, I know. I caught Valley Fever and lost the use of my upper right lobe before finally moving. Check Forbes, Conde Nast, or the EPA for that matter. Maricopa County which includes Mesa is the most polluted area in the United States. Worse than L.A. and your flowery writings will not change that. Perhaps you are reminiscing, but there have been no "Blue Skies" in that area for at least 9 years.

I would really like to hear more about how they came to put Phoenix in the top 10. What criteria was used in this analysis? What types of health problems are caused by particle pollution? It seems strange to see Phoenix up there with Lifden, China. I think most people would like to know more.

It is a shame but true. There are very few days anymore where the air quality alert is not at High. The particulants are exceptionally bad and the ever constant hovering "brown cloud of death" as we call it is quite depressing. It never goes away. Worse than even L.A. now, you can see the brown glob in the sky from an airplane 100 miles away or as soon as you fly south of Flagstaff at an elevation of 10,000 feet or more. Sad that this used to be the place physicians recommended for Asthma.... More

Wow...it seems that they are exagerating this a lot. We only have a few days of pollution here and thats only because of the dustorms we get during the monsoon which is usually cleared by the rain. Other than that, it's clearer than any other major city here in the US.

My family just moved to Phoenix from Pittsburgh, Pa. This city is WAY WAY WAY cleaner then the Burgh. Hasn't anyone ever been there? The sky is always filled with thick grayish-green smog. And it stinks. Like something...mostly old dead fish and factory goo.I have not had a bad day once since being in phoenix! The air is so clean i can breathe much better! I think these researchers need to take a trip to Pittsburgh to really understand poor air quality. I love it here in Phoenix, AZ!!!!

Huh 07/30/2011 21:42 PM

You talkin about Phoenix Arizona? Couldn't help notice you seem to have posted twice but used two names. Glad you like it but its about the nastiest air I ever saw and the whole world now knows about the dust storms, pollution, and the haboobs. Not nice trying to fool people into moving there. It's unhealthy.

they have a lot of other cities that actually use the rules they've imposed to get these great results...

Phoenix

A new area moved to the top of the most-polluted list when judged by year-round particle levels: Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz. Particle pollution is a combination of soot, dust and aerosols that are suspended in the air. Cities with year-round particle pollution face unhealthy levels day-in and day-out, while those with problems with short-term levels have "spikes" in particle pollution that last anywhere from hours to days.
