There are few exercises more arduous than cleaning floors. But, the effect can be spectacular so the effort is often rewarded when guests arrive.
When it comes to green cleaning for floors, the reward is even sweeter because the floors look good and your guests (and you) will breathe easier knowing that no hazardous cleaning materials were used to make everything look spic-and-span.
Before you run off to grab a mop and start cleaning, consider the type of floor you have and know that certain products are not safe for certain types of floors. In other words, don’t start using a tile floor cleaner on wood floors. It will likely mess things up and you will need to get out the sander to make things right.
That said, here are a few ideas for products you can use for green cleaning of floors:
ZEP Green Link Neutral Floor Cleaner
This industrial-use product is a good neutral-pH cleaner with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It also is free of alkyl phenol ethoxylate, a toxic chemical often found in detergents and cleaning products. (Editor's Note: Zep is a Mother Nature Network sponsor)
Method Squirt + Mop Hard Floor Cleaner
Here’s a home floor cleaner that’s proudly green. This no wax version is non-toxic and biodegradable. It comes in two different fragrances: lemon ginger and ginger yuzu.
Method Squirt + Mop Hard Wood Floor Cleaner
This version of the Method cleaner is for wood floors and comes in almond fragrance. All the ingredients are non-toxic for humans and biodegradable. You’ll also love the design of the bottle.
Murphy’s Oil Soap Original
This one is a golden oldie and a trusted brand for cleaning laminate, wood and no-wax floors. It contains cleaning agents derived from plants and coconuts as well as filtered water and natural fragrances. One word of caution: manufactures advise that you not use it on unfinished wood floors.
Mr. Clean Finished Floor Cleaner
Here’s one that was added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list last year. We’ve known Mr. Clean for a long time but never realized he was into green cleaning. In any event, this product can be used on a wide range of shiny finished floor types including ceramic and vinyl tile, terrazzo and varnished hardwood floors.
Earth Choice Neutral pH Floor Cleaner
This product is another industrial or institutional choice for cleaning hard surfaces without harming the finish. The surfactants are plant-derived and cuts through grease and grime. The label description says it can be used on vinyl, tile, sealed concrete and sealed wood floors. It is not recommended for use on marble floors.
