Feb. 1, 1953: One of the worst winter storms in Britain's history claims hundreds of lives, mostly along the North Sea coastline. A ferry sinks in the Irish Sea, claiming 130 lives. Lasting several days, the storm killed more than 2,000 in the U.K. and the Netherlands.Feb. 1, 1905: President Theodore Roosevelt establishes the U.S. Forest Service.
Feb. 1, 2009: Google Earth establishes Google Ocean (at right), the first comprehensive effort to map and visualize the entire ocean floor.
