June 12, 1944: Big Bend National Park
(at right) is established in Texas. Located along the banks of the Rio Grande River, the park features the undisturbed ecology of the Chihuahuan Desert and is a treasure trove of Native American artifacts and history.

Pacific Gas & Electric agrees to pay a $333 million settlement for contamination in the small town of Hinkley, Calif. The case is the result of an investigation by law clerk Erin Brockovich
