Nov. 12, 1996: The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is established in Kansas. It is one of the best intact prairie ecosystems in North America. In 2009, a small herd of the American bison that used to dominate the prairie were reintroduced to Tallgrass.
Nov. 12, 2008: The U.S. Supreme Court approves the U.S. Navy’s use of low frequency sonar, citing national security concerns. Environmentalists had sued, saying the sonar can be lethal to whales.
Nov. 12, 2009: The National Center for Atmospheric Research reports that U.S. weather stations recorded twice as many record high temperatures as record low temperatures from 2000 to mid-2009.
