The Bronx Zoo opens, and the Caspian Sea is the first successful offshore oil drilling site.

Nov. 8, 1899: The New York Zoological Society opens the Bronx Zoo (at right), one of the most sophisticated wildlife exhibits of its day. A century later, the Wildlife Conservation Society has evolved into a global leader in nature protection.

Nov. 8, 1949: After seven months of drilling, a crew strikes oil in the Caspian Sea. The well brings in 100 tons of oil a day, the first major offshore oil strike in history.

Nov. 8, 2004: A panel of 300 scientists issues a report projecting dire environmental changes in the Arctic due to climate change. The report says that in the previous 30 years, Arctic sea ice lost 10 percent of its surface area and about half its thickness.
