FishSept. 18, 1978:  A U.S. law is strengthened to help protect endangered ocean wildlife. The Pelly Amendment, originally passed in 1971, prohibits U.S. imports of fish products from any nation that pursues imperiled species. Chile, Peru and South Korea give up their whaling fleets rather than face U.S. sanctions.

Sept. 18, 2004: Tropical Storm Jeanne forms near Haiti, unleashing torrential rain on the poverty-stricken country. More than 3,000 die in landslides made worse by the denuded and barren Haitian landscape.
