The Fresh food truck operates a stone’s throw from the baseball stadium and just blocks from the gleaming office towers of downtown San Diego. Teresa Smith, a social worker, started The Fresh in 2012 through her nonprofit Dreams for Change to help the district’s hard-to-reach homeless population. Food truck patrons can use their SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) to purchase nutritionally balanced meals at a reasonable price. Smith runs the truck as a microenterprise, recruiting staff members and volunteers to run the truck from the ranks of the at-risk population she serves. In addition to meals, the truck provides outreach and job training to people who want to get their lives back on track.
