Loved the movies The Yes Men and The Yes Men Fix the World? Read that fake edition of the New York Times last November that announced the end of the war in Iraq? Then enjoy too the fake edition of the New York Post — distributed by more than 200 volunteers to nearly a million New Yorkers as a “Global Climate Wake-up Call” action on climate change yesterday!
Headlines scream “Pentagon top brass warn: Act now, or pay later with ‘lives’” and “Congress to New York: ‘Swim for it!’” — highlighting the inaction of our government in the face of more and more studies that have shown we’ll be in serious trouble unless we take serious action now. See the reactions of New Yorkers in The Yes Men video below:
According to The Yes Men, all facts in the paper are true — even though the paper’s fake:
“This could be, and should be, a real New York Post,” said Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men. “Climate change is the biggest threat civilization has ever faced, and it should be in the headlines of every paper, every day until we solve the problem.”
The messages and science in the articles and the headlines of the fake Post are similar to the ones espoused by 350.org, the Bill McKibben-led eco-nonprofit, and The Age of Stupid filmmaker-activists, whose documentary warns that we could become the fist species to knowingly allow our own extinction.
Read the fake Post to learn more about the important studies about climate change that go unreported, underreported or unemphasized in mainstream media. The doom and gloom reading’s really quite funny, with metaphors like the one at the end of this quote:
What’s already been happening down south — remember the storm surges of Katrina? — will start occurring in New York City. Rising waters will lay waste to precious real estate. Plus, as happened in New Orleans, parts of the city could become unsanitary, unsafe, and unlivable due to the destruction of infrastructure and jobs. But that’s just an appetizer for our future crap sandwich.
Post, read, act to help avoid that crap sandwich. The Beyond Talk article, which urges — “Tired of hearing about climate change? Then do something. Now” — can help you out with links to enviro-activism you can and should get involved with, NOW.
